Another 20% of those drafted simply fled to the woods and never showed up. Of 776,000 men drafted, only 46,000 ever saw combat.

@justacrip1 @InPursuitUSA @BarackObama Lincoln kept the Union together in 1861 because he knew just how touchy the border states and even the lower Midwest were. Remember, Lincoln was elected as a moderate in 1860.

Lincoln was always pressured to shift to the left on slavery. Lincoln changed as the situation changed.

Which wasn't his fauly. Republicans were and still are far more racist than most people know. Everything flows from that.
