#skyrail has been successful. Yes it won’t fix every urban problem (kids playing in a playground is not an urban problem and you shouldn’t be taking photos of them but then again you take photos of homeless people) anyway yeah lots of greenery, home values way up and a success
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs I didn't ever suggest getting rid of cars. I'm just suggesting that cycling could a viable option for more people. We don't need to be Amsterdam. Compromise maybe? Or is sitting in endless car traffic the only acceptable option for you?
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs I've also been to Amsterdam, they definitely have suburbs too. But they have bike lanes and public transport everywhere.
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs I did some googling and frankly was surprised to discover that the Amsterdam metropolitan area is the same size as Melbourne's and has half the population
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs It took time to get the cars out of Amsterdam as the pic shows.
Melbourne doesn't have to be a car only city. There's no reason there can't be a mix of all modes of transport
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs It took the Netherlands 30 years to reach the point they're at and it involved the kind of investment that you would deem a waste of money because "nobody wants it"
Again, its like not supporting a train to the airport because nobody takes the train to the airport
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs There's no point continuing this conversation. I swear, I could show you pictures of crowded cycle lanes and you'd still insist that they're a useless waste of money. I never said it would save the planet. I just said it would relieve traffic by taking cars off the road
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs You're just repeating yourself now and I'm getting bored. It's a tiny fraction of the Westgate tunnel project budget which will accommodate a larger fraction of commuters on the route. It's not a waste of money because it will be used and there will be knock on benefits for all
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs OK, try this. 2000 cyclists traveled the same route as the new veloway every day. The new road is expected to carry around 15,000 vehicles a day. Even if the number of cyclists doesn't increase, that's a decent share of the traffic on that route. I wonder which part cost more...
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs Here's the source. https://t.co/Lctfu5Kg8U
Page 6 shows estimate of 1.23 Million people riding a bike in a typical week. Page 14 says that 45.2% of those people ride for transport rather than leisure.
Nice try, but I didn't make it up. It's not just riding to work though
@consensusadidem@GGeoffed@XtrapolisLegs It's not a handful of people. Pre-pandemic figures estimate around half a million people cycle for transport every month and use of cycle lanes has actually increased since then. More people cycling means less cars on the road and less traffic. Which benefits everyone
