@gotrice2024 Nah Iโm with the Mom on this one, the other child was horning in on the day. Mom was being nice and if the one was rare they just traded toys.
@GWinslow69@davjens109 I thought that back when she was at deadspin. What if this is the ultimate troll job and she got all of us. Nobody in that dumb.
The Civil Rights Act is why
The lesson white America learned during the riots of the 60s and crime tidal wave of the 70s is that any community can be ruined near-instantly, and that the only real barriers to such a dire fate are space and cost
As such, the suburbs are built to be sterile. Theyโre uncomfortably far away from city centers, are as far as possible from โhigh density housingโ of the โlow incomeโ sort, driving to amenities is required because public transport just gives mobility to the enemy, the houses are spaced out and have yards/driveways in which criminals can be seen if breaking are attempted, etc. the houses are all of similar, hopefully high, cost, as that keeps the potential troublemakers at bay.
Everything about them is meant to be defensive in a way that complies with the civil rights act
โWalkable citiesโ are just deathtraps when the crime waves and riots inevitably come, which they will because the CRA and other legislation makes effective proactive policing all but impossible. If you want them, youโll first have to get it repealed
Paired with that, our attitude toward criminal justice will have to change. Rehabilitation is essentially impossible for vast swathes of the population, and pretending that it isnโt is much of what puts criminals out on the streets time and time again, making our cities so dangerous
