PauseAI ⏸

Community of volunteers who work together to mitigate the risks of AI. We want to internationally pause the development of superintelligent AI until it's safe.

[PauseAI ⏸ @PauseAI]

45 people have left frontier AI labs and said, publicly or on the record, that safety and ethical/societal concerns were the reason.

The people closest to the work keep walking away and trying to warn us. It's time to listen. An international agreement to pause AI development is an ambitious solution, but it is feasible, and it's the bar we need to clear. So let's get to work.

This independent tracker documents each departure with the person's own warnings: https://t.co/y6NDq1bUmU

Senator Bernie Sanders is calling for a pause in AI development.

He's not the only one. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has also said AI needs strong guardrails to move forward. Concern about the race to superhuman AI cuts across politics, because the people building it say they don't know how to keep it safe.

We're asking for a global pause on frontier AI development until we know how to build it safely, backed by an international agreement.

Join our movement to pause today: https://t.co/1uJfpykiv6

[Sen. Bernie Sanders @SenSanders]

The Florida Attorney General & I do not have much in common politically. But he is right on this: Advanced AI research should not go forward until we have strong guardrails.

This is not just a Florida issue. It is an issue for the whole country & the world.

PAUSE AI DEVELOPMENT

@SenSanders Yes

Great to see more grassroots advocacy happening in the US - well done to @Peopleforapause for organising their first ever protest in DC last Saturday and thanks to @DavidSKrueger for being there and giving a wise speech.

President Trump may be among the last AI risk skeptics, but he also literally wrote the book on how to make winning deals, so let's not write off the potential for good outcomes ahead - let's keep encouraging America and China to give up their surface-level race dynamics and come together by signing an AI pause treaty.

We had our first protest in Washington D.C. this Saturday. We had around 50 attendees, and a great reception from passersby. Americans are ready to pause AI now!

[PauseAI ⏸ @PauseAI]

Key decision makers are forming unlikely alliances to protect humanity from extinction risk from advanced AI.

Citizens from all over the world have come together to reach out to press and politicians, and even organise protests that have generated unprecedented media coverage across the world. The world is waking up.

This month alone, many people from all walks of life have decided to use their power as citizens and community members to organise by joining PauseAI.

This is heartening to see. And it's just the beginning - by coming together, we can secure the political will to make sure AI benefits humanity and never threatens to destroy it.

Ready to act? Join our community - there are so many ways to build on this momentum together.

A really fantastic explainer by Ezra Klein of the current situation we find ourselves in with respect to AI.

The sort of video I can send to my parents 😀 Highly recommend!

@danilupion @JonhernandezIA @FournesMaxime Maxime would be a great guest!

Let's empower others to pause frontier AI development until it can be developed safely.

[Dani Lupión ⏸️ @danilupion]

@JonhernandezIA Hi, great interview!

Some of the clips shown at the opening are from a debate @PauseAI fostered at the European Parliament in February. I am sure I could connect you with @FournesMaxime, our CEO, for an interview.

There's a lot of new people joining the field at the moment.

You're about to go through the same thing I went through a few years back.

"Surely this can't be real?"
"Surely the labs aren't being that careless?"
"Surely sometime would have stepped in by now?"

It reminds me of a great quote from Sir Terry Pratchett (gnu):

"the thought in many minds was: What is someone else going to do about this?
It had not yet progressed to:
What am I going to do about this?"

The truth is, it is up to us.

*We* need to step up.

Right now is a critical time in AI safety.

After the multiple Open AI hacking sprees, and then Jacob Coxon resigning so publicly last Wednesday, it's finally breaking through.

People are waking up to the danger we find ourselves in. That the powers that be are racing to a cliff edge and gambling with all our lives.

This doesn't have to be.

Here at Pause AI we are working hard, pushing on our governments from the bottom up.
We demand an international treaty to stop the race.

Often, when tough things happen, we expect that other people, the people in charge must have got it covered.
That's just not the case.

Right now, we're in a critical window and we need to push on it with everything we've got!

We need your help to Pause AI!

[PauseAI ⏸ @PauseAI]

@v_maini Thank you for speaking out!

[PauseAI ⏸ @PauseAI]

@SenWarren Thank you!

[PauseAI UK @PauseAI_UK]

Just a couple of great pictures from today's protest!

Thank you everyone who came!

We're still here chatting and hanging out. So many awesome and interesting people to meet!

The UK is about to be host to the G20 in December.
Andy Burnham, please convene a summit to discuss an international pause of development of unsafe AI.

The world is waking up to extinction risk in the wake of Jacob Coxon's resignation.

We need to rise up to the occasion now.

Every one of us. Drop everything and join us.

Emergency protests are being launched worldwide to make sure governments hear the people and the experts' voices during this critical window (links in thread). Tell your friends. Be there.

The Hugging Face attack has shown AIs are capable of autonomously hacking companies. With relentless persistence, these AI agents dismantled every barrier in their way to achieve their goal. Future AIs will pursue their goals just as relentlessly, but with more-than-human intelligence. If we try to stand in their way, we may not win that fight.

Politicians are responding. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar announced the first US bill to ban superintelligence. In the UK, Alex Sobel has done the same, and over 70 MPs and peers have signed ControlAI's letter urging Andy Burnham to back it, calling on him to use the UK's G20 presidency next year to build "a coalition of the willing to tackle this national and international security threat."

The human story cannot end here. Loss of control to AI is entirely preventable. We must unite, worldwide, for humanity.

@jawwwn_ @CNBC We've been saying the same thing for years now: an AI pause through an international treaty, where both monitor the training hardware. We've done the same thing for uranium enrichment.

[PauseAI ⏸ @PauseAI]

@SenSanders 💯

[Sen. Bernie Sanders @SenSanders]

Dario Amodei, Elon Musk and Sam Altman now agree that we must slow down the development of AI and “pace the frontier.”

That’s a start, but it’s not enough.

When you are racing towards a cliff, you don’t just ease up on the gas pedal. You hit the brakes.

When the future of humanity is at stake we need a PAUSE on advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence — an AI mind smarter than any human and capable of operating independently beyond our control.

At their upcoming AI summit, Trump and Xi must negotiate a treaty to pause AI and ban superintelligence before it is too late.

By being honest about the severity of the problem, and not merely “express[ing] fear privately”, you’ve made your renunciation of the race the loud and clear message many needed to hear.

Thank you, Jacob. We hope others who are considering forsaking the labs are noticing how impactful that honesty is.
