Kanigiri's Groundwater & Kidney Disease – My Research Findings

My research indicates that the low-lying areas of Kanigiri act as natural collection zones for groundwater. Due to gravitational flow, fluoride and agrochemicals accumulate in these regions, leading to a higher concentration of contaminants in drinking water.

Groundwater depletion further intensifies fluoride levels, making it a major risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Additionally, agricultural runoff carrying pesticides and fertilizers seeps into the water table, compounding the health crisis.

To dilute fluoride and agrochemical concentration, increasing groundwater levels is crucial. This can be achieved through:
✅ Rainwater harvesting – Recharging groundwater through percolation pits and check dams.
✅ Afforestation – Planting deep-rooted trees to improve water retention.
✅ Artificial recharge wells – Injecting treated water into aquifers to restore balance.
✅ Regulated borewell usage – Preventing over-extraction to maintain groundwater sustainability.
✅ Wetland conservation – Protecting natural recharge areas to improve water quality.
The evidence suggests a strong link between groundwater contamination and kidney disease prevalence in Kanigiri. Addressing this issue requires safe drinking water initiatives, fluoride mitigation strategies, and stricter agrochemical regulations to prevent further health risks.

Dr. D. Nageshwara Reddy, the renowned gastroenterologist from AIG Hospitals, has been honored with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.

Dr. D. Nageshwara Reddy is a distinguished Indian gastroenterologist and the Chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) and AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad, India. Born on March 18, 1956, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, he hails from a family with a rich medical heritage. His father, Dr. D. B. Reddy, was one of India’s youngest professors of pathology, and his maternal grandfather, Dr. Govinda Reddy, was a professor of pathology and medicine at Madras Medical College.

Dr. Reddy completed his M.B.B.S. at Kurnool Medical College, followed by an M.D. from Madras Medical College, and a D.M. in Gastroenterology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad and later served as a Professor at Guntur Medical College. In 2014, he founded the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, which has grown to become one of the world’s largest gastroenterology hospitals.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Reddy has made significant contributions to the field of gastroenterology, particularly in therapeutic pancreatobiliary endoscopy and innovations in transgastric endoscopic surgery. He has published over 670 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals and has contributed chapters to 20 international gastroenterology textbooks. He has also edited eight GI endoscopy textbooks.

Dr. Reddy’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including the B.C. Roy Award in 1995, the Padma Shri in 2002, and the Padma Bhushan in 2016. In 2009, he received the Master Endoscopist Award from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), considered the highest honor in the field of endoscopy. He was also honored with the Rudolf V. Schindler Award by the ASGE, recognizing his significant contributions to gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Beyond his clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Reddy has served as the President of the World Endoscopy Organization and has been a visiting faculty member for over 200 international endoscopy workshops. His dedication to advancing gastroenterology has solidified his reputation as a global leader in the field.
