Microsoft Word documents are where the real power in every company lives. The contracts. The board memos. The termination letters. The $400M acquisition agreements. Not Slack. Not email. The .docx file that gets signed, gets litigated, gets audited.

Claude just graduated to beta inside that file.

Not as a chatbot you copy-paste from. As a co-editor that writes directly into the document and shows every change as tracked revisions, the same way a human editor or lawyer would. Your boss can accept or reject each AI edit one by one. The revision history looks identical to a person's.

This is why Google Docs never fully replaced Word in law firms, banks, or regulated industries. Word's tracked changes aren't a feature. They're a legal artifact. Courts accept them. Auditors accept them. Compliance teams require them.

Claude is now writing into documents that get signed by CEOs and reviewed by regulators. Not summarizing them after the fact. Producing the draft that becomes the final version.

The last software company that embedded this deeply into Microsoft Office was Adobe with PDF. That was a $240B outcome. Anthropic is doing the same thing, except the sidebar doesn't just read your document. It reasons about it.
