In February 1937 Chamberlain's government agreed that defence spending had to rise... and rise rapidly.
So the UK spent on defence:
1936: 136 m
1937: 168 m (+23%)
1938: 382 m (+127%)
1939: 630 m (+65%)
Note that in 1939 the entire (!) British government revenue was £942 m.

Let's remember that the Greek hero Ajax committed suicide during the Trojan War over a dispute about - ironically - armour.
The armour of his fallen cousin, Achilles, was awarded to the much smarter Odysseus.
Distraught and humiliated by this perceived insult, Ajax went mad, slaughtered the Greek army’s livestock because he thought that they were the generals who had betrayed him, and subsequently fell upon his own (previously Hector's) sword.
Time to be more like Odysseus and to let Ajax go.
Launched in 1782, the Speedy had a long and eventful career. The latter period under Cochrane, which ended when she was captured again by the French in July 1801, was the inspiration for Patrick O'Brian's first Aubrey-Maturin novel, 'Master and Commander'. [3/3] #RoyalNavy
On the 80th anniversary of the London Victory Parade, a few points...
1. The new Labour government didn't particularly want a parade. Rationing was in force, British servicemen were still scattered overseas, and much of London was still in ruins

The Shambolic State of the Royal Navy’s SSN Flotilla
As always views are my own, corrections and comments welcome.
I had just finished a thread on NMH but then I read the papers this morning 🤨
1/25 The Royal Navy’s submarine service, long a cornerstone of Britain’s strategic power and national security, finds itself in a profoundly concerning condition. This thread attempts to provide a forensic examination of the historical prestige of the UK’s nuclear submarine capability, the acute crisis highlighted in the papers today, the systemic mismanagement that has developed over decades, the root institutional causes, and the challenging yet essential path to recovery.
It’s not a happy read - apologies.
Very beautiful photos of the French Air Force aerobatic team, the @PAFofficiel, flying over #Greenland on its way to North America to take part in the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Because of the Alphajets' limited range, the Patrouille de France crosses the North Atlantic in several stages (🇫🇷🏴🇮🇸🇬🇱🇨🇦🇺🇸).

My Uncle passed away earlier this week. He was a Purple Heart recipient, a Vietnam Veteran, and a member of the elite Navy Seawolves. He followed me on here, and so, in honor of him, I put together these badass clips from the archives of the Seawolves HA(L)-3. R.I.P. Uncle Jim.🫡
@pegge49@RoyalNavy I was in Hong Kong at the time. I remember walking to work one morning and being surprised to see HMS Invincible entering Victoria Harbour from the eastern Tathong Channel.
