On this day, 25 October, we honor the 100th birth anniversary of Air Marshal Abdur Rahim Khan, HJ, HQA, SPk, SBt, a visionary leader and decorated war hero whose name is forever engraved in the proud history of Pakistan Air Force. Born in 1925, he earned Burma Medal for valor during World War II and became the first Pakistani pilot to break the sound barrier in 1952, marking a historic milestone. He had the honor to command No 11 Squadron, PAF’s first jet squadron, equipped with Supermarine Attackers, becoming its inaugural Squadron Commander.
Air Marshal Abdur Rahim Khan played a pivotal role in all phases of the 1965 war. Serving as ACAS (Operations) at Air Headquarters, he demonstrated exceptional skill in devising war plans and led air operations from the front, flying numerous combat missions. Notably, on 18 September 1965, then Air Cdre Abdur Rahim Khan led a daring strike near IAF’s Srinagar airfield. Commanding No 19 Squadron’s F-86 Sabres, he targeted an Indian Army convoy on Awantipura-Srinagar road. The mission was a resounding success, with F-86 Sabres unleashing a devastating barrage that ignited multiple fires and explosions, effectively destroying the enemy’s logistics chain.
On 01 Sep 1969, he assumed the command of PAF in the rank of Air Marshal — a moment that marked the beginning of an era defined by vision, precision and valour. During the 1971 war, as Chief of the Air Staff, he commanded the PAF with a razor-sharp strategic intellect and unyielding resolve. Under his leadership, Pakistan Air Force executed its missions with unmatched brilliance and efficiency. General Chuck Yeager, the renowned UN Military Observer to Pakistan, recorded that during the two-week air campaign, PAF under Air Marshal Abdur Rahim Khan’s command shot down 102 Russian-made Indian fighters — a feat that echoed across the skies of South Asia. His legacy is not confined to the pages of history; it burns as a living flame — a source of pride and inspiration in the heart of every PAF Shaheen.

On this day, 23 October, we honor the 98th birth anniversary of Air Commodore Nazir Latif, SJ — a legendary Ghazi of the 1965 & 1971 wars whose name is forever engraved in the proud chronicles of Pakistan Air Force. Born in 1927, and trained at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, Nazir Latif embodied the spirit of precision, discipline and daring that define a true Shaheen. His brilliance in the skies was not confined to combat alone — he set world records with PAF’s elite aerobatic teams, carving his mark as one of the most skilled aviators of his era.
Commanding of No 31 Wing at Mauripur during the 1965 war, he transformed his bomber units into a force of unmatched readiness. On the night of 8 September 1965, then Wg Cdr Nazir Latif led a two-ship B-57 formation on a perilous mission against the heavily fortified Ambala Air Base. His aircraft took heavy damage, but his resolve never faltered. He pressed on, struck his target with precision, and brought his men safely home — a feat that embodied both mastery and valor. Under his leadership, PAF bombers unleashed devastation across key enemy strongholds — Ambala, Adampur, Pathankot, Sirsa, Srinagar, Jodhpur and even the highly guarded Agra Base — crippling India’s air operations and shaking its defensive might. For his extraordinary bravery, leadership and composure under fire, Wing Commander Nazir Latif was decorated with the Sitara-e-Jurat.
When the guns roared again in 1971, Air Commodore Nazir Latif, then commanding PAF Base Masroor, once more rose to the call of duty. His strategic brilliance played a pivotal role in thwarting Indian advances in the Khokhrapar–Chor sector, reaffirming his reputation as a commander of exceptional vision and courage. Throughout his illustrious career, he commanded fighter squadrons, bomber wings and the prestigious Fighter Leaders’ School, while also pioneering PAF’s first supersonic aerobatic team, “The Rattlers.” Air Commodore Nazir Latif’s legacy is not merely history — it is a living flame within the hearts of every PAF Shaheen. His story continues to inspire the skies of Pakistan, reminding every generation that courage knows no night too dark and duty no height too great.
