Obviously this isn’t backed by anything that thinking out loud… @LanceBroz@drivelinekyle@ParadigmPDS wonder if any of you guys have thoughts or think my thinking is too convoluted
Never understood the point of just looking at platoon splits in a vacuum… perhaps teams think to take the platoon advantage UNLESS it is a really good hitter that hits everyday. Meaning if you are facing a lefty as a LHP it is probably a very good one, inflating splits.
Marlins again going almost all righty against a reverse splits lefty.
Payton Tolle in his MLB career:
vs. RHH: 30.8 K%, .641 OPS
vs. LHH: 18.7 K%, .758 OPS
Like nobody is benching PCA or ohtani against a LHP, but the more avg. LHH will be benched in favor of a RHH platoon bat who will (obv) be worse than the elite LHH. Curious if anyone has done any stat creation to control for quality of hitter a pitcher actually faces
@LanceBroz Some high volume training facilities (@TreadAthletics@drivelinekyle) hopefully start pairing that data soon since they would have a pretty robust set. I think guys in/around the game for a while already have a coarse intuitive sense on how the two interact and are best rn…
Looking at some Ramon Marquez today after reading @LanceBroz write up from a couple weeks ago. one thing that struck me was how similar his movement patterns map to devin williams with early extension of the back leg and trunk, likely assisting in getting to the inside of ball
@drivelinekyle Can we all stop analyzing one kade anderson start? It is hard to adjust to diff balls. I’m sure you could name a dozen PCL skipping arms that have had the same “issue” and have had their shapes bounce back just fine. Do we really think he has a 1900rpm heater for his future?
Can we collectively stop freaking out about Kade anderson’s “fastball regression”? It’s been one start. Anyone who has pitched knows it is not an overnight get used to the ball. You really think his spin is going to park at 1900?
@LanceBroz Undoubtedly. At what point do you just say screw it Kade, i don’t care if you give up a million homers just go throw with that ball in AAA for 2 starts… I think they did something similar with Gilbert when he came up
home-plate umpire in the Iowa v California LLWS game was AWFUL the entire game but that last one was the WORST. called strike3 to end the game was a foot off the plate
@TewksHitting then you could reasonably say the pitcher is still accurate and is using the glove as a starting spot or visual cue. Perhaps adding a distribution of miss size to a visual would help, and you could look for large amplitudes? Would love to hear @open_command thoughts.
@TewksHitting I think it may be easy to determine based on the larger sample.
I.e. if you look at data it spits out and you see a large “cloud” of target dots and then another “cloud” of location dots shifted in a certain direction (rather than huge variance) (1/2)
