@Protohedgehog Agree 100%. I have no problem with good profits - that's the purpose of doing business. However medical publishers like Elsevier need to acknowledge that without researchers & reviewers, they have no business. Pay well & demand quality. There are no losers in this model

Had a journal cancel their request for my review of a paper today... the day I spent four hours reviewing the paper. Told them to never contact me again for any reason. Why the hell do we continue to support this process?

The response was longer than I expected. A letter is certainly better than payment.

PROPOSAL: Journals hire full-time professional peer reviewers and compensate them equitably. This opens opportunities for folks with PhDs who do not want to be professors, and work can be done remotely. Professors can continue their streams of research unburdened by peer review.
