I’m pretty confident this would have been very close to a pick’em, if not a pick’em, a week ago, and I’m just not sure one big win over Fritz should change the pricing this much.
Munar hasn’t shown much consistency in stringing together high-quality performances this season, largely because of his fitness issues. And in general, backing up a high-profile win is never straightforward, especially when it comes after a marathon like today’s — almost three hours on court — and he doesn’t even get a day off before playing again.
As mentioned many times before, Faria is one of those players who can look pretty ugly when things aren’t clicking, but when they are, he can be extremely difficult to stop. That volatility is exactly why I don’t mind trusting him at a cheaper underdog price, where you’re being compensated for those potential lows.
His short career on the main tour supports that idea so far as well - Faria has returned +17% ROI as an underdog (source: https://t.co/plSltpXF4Z). Obviously, we’re still dealing with a relatively small sample, but it does align with my view that his upside tends to make him an interesting player at plus money.
Overall, in a season plagued by fitness issues, Munar has yet to show that he can consistently string together several high-quality performances. After such a big and physically demanding win, I think the market has upgraded him too much. With a dangerous and historically profitable underdog on the other side of the net, I’m happy to fade that move and side with Faria.

When you look closely at the matchup dynamics, the odds heavily overvalue Zheng’s recent head-to-head edge while underestimating the brutal travel toll he faces. Zheng had a quick turnaround after wrapping up his run in Tiburon on September 19, forcing him to endure an 18 hour flight to get to China. Factoring in the 15 hour time difference between California and Hangzhou, he effectively gets barely a day on court to shake off severe jet lag, acclimatize to temperatures pushing near 86°F (30°C), and adjust his stroke timing to completely different tournament balls. Crucially, this marks Zheng’s debut on Asian soil, a major milestone that comes with real adjustment challenges compared to playing familiar domestic hardcourts.
Conversely, Bu comes into this setup under ideal conditions. Playing in front of his home crowd, the local favorite has been fully settled in China, perfectly adapted to the local humidity and court speeds. This venue holds fond memories for him, having surged all the way to the semifinals here back in 2024. Fresh off a extended rest period following his US Open main-draw win over Rafael Jodar, Bu has had ample time to refine his game plan and physical conditioning. While Zheng took their last meeting in four sets in New York, the situational flipped entirely, Bu now gets a prime revenge spot at home against a fatigued opponent who is stepping onto foreign courts for the first time.
Given the extreme contrast in rest, travel fatigue, and venue familiarity, pricing Zheng as a heavy favorite offers zero analytical value, making Bu at an appealing price point the far superior play.
