If the second Aazan for Fajr is given, you can pray the Subh prayer before departure. However, if it is not given, you can begin your travel and stop to pray when the Aazan is called later. If there is no provision for stopping, you can pray inside the car while sitting.

The Prophet (SAAW) said, "Pray standing if you can. If you cannot, then pray sitting..." (Bukhari reported, number 1117). In addition, Allah says, "Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope" (Qur'an, Chapter 2, Verse 286). Based on these two references, you can pray inside the car while sitting as a last option since delaying a prayer outside its time is not allowed.

Regarding the total number of days for Qasr, there are divergent views among scholars, as no authentic hadith specifically mentions the days for shortening the prayer.

In summary, the most popular view is that as long as one is considered a traveller, he can pray Qasr. If he is not a traveller, they can complete his 4 raka'at.

Undoubtedly, it is an issue of Ijtihaad. For example, Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), stayed in Azerbaijan for 6 months, shortened his prayers throughout the period due to the snow.

Indeed, Allah is the All-Knowing.

The Story Behind This Picture

There is an interesting story behind this picture. It was taken during the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in October 2021. On the sidelines of the Summit, late President Muhammadu Buhari was scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with the Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman at his Al‑Yamamah Palace.

As expected, the President’s advance team had already departed from the hotel to prepare for the meeting. We were seated in our media vehicle, waiting for Baba to come down so we could proceed to the Palace. Then, a sudden signal came through that the Crown Prince had requested that Baba remain at the hotel; he would come to personally meet him there because he said Baba was like a father to him.

Within minutes, the entire hotel was overtaken by Saudi security. The Managing Director of the hotel, along with his entire senior management team, came down to personally oversee preparations and receive the Crown Prince. I asked one of the Saudi protocol officers about the unusual gesture and he explained that “For the Crown Prince to leave his Palace and come to a hotel to meet a visiting leader, it means he holds your President in the highest possible regard.” The hotel staff also confirmed that such a thing had never happened before in the hotel’s history.
