So much of the mainstream media reporting on trans people is garbage. But journalists like @ErinInTheMorn and @assignedmedia are showing that there's a better way.

With or without DEI. We’ve been doing it since 1921. Bessie Coleman did it in spite of racism and so do we. Teach young Black girls they can do anything they set their mind to do!

The work of lesser-known artist Laura Wheeling Waring takes center stage in The Harlem Renaissance and Transnational Modernism at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Despite not being the most well-known figure today, Waring was the leading black female portraitist during the peak of the New Negro movement. She is best known for her series "Portraits of Outstanding Americans of Negro Origin." I, however, am most drawn to this 1927 portrait of an unidentified young woman with a bobbed, Jazz Age era coiffure and elegant drop-waisted flapper dress. Here Waring presents a striking example of the deliberate construction of a modern, self-possessed black subject.
