What is a peptide? (no, it’s not “steroids for people who read abstracts”)
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids.
Amino acids = the LEGO bricks of proteins.
String a few together → peptide.
String a lot together and fold it into a monster → protein.
That’s the whole trick.
Insulin is a peptide. Oxytocin is a peptide. The crust on your GHK-Cu vial is a peptide. Your mitochondria even sneak-write their own (hi MOTS-C).
How short?
• 2–3 bricks = di/tripeptide (GHK, KPV)
• ~4–20 = the catalog sweet spot (SS-31, BPC-157, MOTS-C)
• Get long enough and people stop calling it a peptide and start calling it a protein so they can charge more for the textbook.
What they do in biology: they’re messages, not meals. A hormone is often a peptide that says “do this.” A receptor is the thing that hears it. Research peptides are synthetic versions of those messages — or fragments, analogs, and weird mitochondrial sticky notes — sold so labs can poke pathways in a dish.

@EngineeringSU Mini racecars in the first year is such a good hook. Nothing teaches tolerances and friction faster than watching your car veer left of the mark. Do the teams get to iterate on their designs after the first run?
@OSO_Tee Such good advice for anyone applying. Checking the posted scales before the interview takes so much guesswork out of it. It's also worth asking whether there are yearly step increases and who covers health insurance, since that varies a lot.
@VolkerHaucke A great lab manager is the quiet engine of a new lab. Setting one up from scratch, with ordering, safety, equipment and onboarding all at once, is a fun challenge for the right person. Good luck with the search!
@romyroyz Pipetting is sneaky hard to automate well though. Viscous samples, foaming, tiny volumes, tips that don't seat right. Liquid handlers are great until someone hands them glycerol. Agree it's where the biggest time sink is.
@zlyski This is such a useful thing to gather data on. The jump from internal funding to an external fellowship can change benefits, payroll status, even visa details in ways nobody warns postdocs about. Hope you get lots of responses.
@remiraven 90 single-handed on Bulgarians is no joke, those humble everyone. And then cardio after? Respect. Do you hold the weight on the same side as the working leg or the opposite?
@MDA_UTHGrad Love that the advisors hand them over personally. Congrats to the second-years! Give it a semester and those coats will have their first mystery stain and a pen permanently living in the pocket.
@bryk_squuaadd 9 for 9 with a PR on every lift is a dream meet day. That 37lb squat jump is wild. Did Rick open conservative and let the attempts build, or was the plan aggressive from the start?
@yamaybioinc Fewer layers is huge when you're assembling sandwiches at 7pm and fighting bubbles. Curious how they hold up on wet vs semi-dry transfer, and do they stay even after a few reuses?

@reluctantlyjoe@saintsoftness Science vocabulary is full of accidental poetry. "Western blot" really does sound like divination, and "apoptosis" literally comes from the Greek for leaves falling. Would love to read those poems.
@sabeeeng__ Love that you wrote the October targets down with exact numbers. +20 kg on deadlift in a month is ambitious but very doable from 100. Rooting for you, post the update at the end of the month!
@tscilaer Lab, lab meeting AND an exam all going well on the same day is a rare alignment. Screenshot this energy for the next week your gels refuse to cooperate 😄
@smokinscientist@WithBukky Enjoying the reading makes all the difference. The people who struggle with lit reviews usually struggle with the organizing, not the reading. Any system you used to keep track of papers back then?
@finix599@Michael_J_Black That one-line "where are we in the project" note at the top of each page is underrated. Six months later it's the difference between rerunning an experiment and just finding the answer. Did your boss enforce a template or did it evolve on its own?
