Need strategies, systems to bring safety to residents (key stakeholders) in fire-prone areas. Plus science, education, enforcement to enable self-reliance.
@gollnerfire@Peta_FirewiseWA@wildfiretoday Sometimes I give talks on the Ghost Ship Fire. Completely preventable if existing codes and standards were utilized. That was for interior construction. Home hardening is no different imo but for exterior. Our mindset needs to change.
@NickBartlett20@gollnerfire@wildfiretoday The difficulty is that the whole of the south west corner of the state of Western Australia is #bushfire prone. Curiously it is not widely recognised as such.
If more residents realised the dangers there may be more action. Concerns that real estate values may be affected.
3…2…1 @AusAirForce’s first-ever rocket launch from Aust zoomed to the edge of space today at Mach 5 from @SouthernLaunch Koonibba Test Range. The rocket released a prototype #PlanJericho radio frequency receiver unit to improve situational awareness. We have lift off! 🚀
"Here as there, brute force has shown its limits, and after long years of war, the time has come for compromise. For peace." @MartinKuz writes another great article, this time likening our war on fire with war in Afghanistan. https://t.co/51QDbQA50X
@headecon@jswatz@bradplumer@nytimes There is plenty that can be done in the here and now.
In the short and turbulent spring that we have in SW WA we can remove, cut back any flammable vegetation within 20 m at least from house.
Hydrangeas are unlikely to burn, but worth pruning back once frost danger past.
While great for home privacy, fences can post a threat during a #wildfire. Learn how they can ignite & steps to take to improve their safety in this Fact Sheet from @NFPA & @disastersafety. Download: https://t.co/USNkIoC7hD #firewise#fireadapted#defensiblespace#widlfireprep
Group 3 of the #NSWRFS Mitigation Crews during induction weeks of training at Dubbo Academy.
These crews will support communities performing vital hazard reduction works across NSW.
Looks they are ready to jump right in🙌🏻

@bushfirevol An additional option could be to do some cleaning up and clearing out around residents’ houses, so that when or if a #bushfire comes close there is little to burn.
Residents need to be able to see examples of properties set up to be at low risk.
Eg Agapanthus, Japanese Quince.
@rcarlmark Worth saying. Smoke 💨 in the air is hazardous to humans - all humans, not just those with existing conditions I do have an existing condition, wished I had been checked out earlier.
For over 30 years we had a wood fire and a stove fire inside. Quite small, and most for heating
Product Development within https://t.co/5GzELtD2T3. Biomass / Fuel Load Reduction pre- during- and post-fire with mineral-soil-line in one go: The "Robogreen Firemaster". Great piece of kit! light, mobile, flexible, rugged, offroad, multifunctional....
It might take a long time to reduce climate change, but fuels in local forests and around towns can be reduced/removed quickly.
Our local waste disposal site accepts vegetation that is best taken off residents’ property. It is turned into mulch and composted.

@maresmit@CulturalFire In Western Australia (SW) where most of the population lives #bushfires can be frequent.
Prescribed burning is carried out in moister months (but not mid-winter, too wet).
Modern days bring more permanent structures near bush; residents concerned about smoke; burn plans, 40pp.
@WAParksWildlife @Asthma_WA @BOM_WA@dfes_wa Its worth trying to keep smoke exposure to a minimum; it contains a range of carcinogens capable of triggering lung cancer in people.
@Eytan_Forest In SW Western Australia, we don’t have pines occurring naturally, but we do have plantations of them.
The plantations need to be managed to reduce #bushfire risk else a spark In harvesting could start a bushfire.
