Last June MPs were told “just vote it through and leave scrutiny to the Lords”.
As soon as the Lords started scrutinising, the campaign switched to “the Lords must bow to the Commons”.
Trump: If anybody thinks that Norway doesn't control the Nobel prize, they're just kidding. They have a board, but it's controlled by Norway. And I don't care what Norway says
Social media works on likes/shares etc. I'm challenged that it is easier to like/share the things we don't care about but find amusing than share the things that matter. This matters to me. https://t.co/TkZjg6zArV
Perhaps a major attraction to Christianity in Britain in years to come will be that we don’t kill our infants & old people
Belief - even residual - that we are all made in the image of God is what leads us to protect the most vulnerable rather than dispatch them as inconvenient
Holland has a very similar committee to what is now proposed here - "In one case approved by an RTE committee consisting of a doctor, an ethicist and chaired by a lawyer, a boy aged between 16 and 18 who had autism, anxiety and depressive feelings was euthanised legally."
Only coordinated in the sense that Europe now realises that (a) Ukraine is fighting for it, and deserves their unequivocal support, and (b) that the USA has retreated into itself, and will provide support only on the basis of bended knee and open cheque book.
The new occupant of the White House believes that it isn’t in America’s interest to support freedom when it’s under threat. This is the new global reality.
5 reasons the Trump and Vance bullying of Zelentsky made me angry
1. Arrogance Towards Zelensky
Trump and Vance treated Zelensky with blatant condescension, refusing to acknowledge his courageous leadership or the gravity of Ukraine’s struggle. Their smug, patronising words show no understanding of diplomacy or basic manners. Things started badly with Trump mocking Zelentsky's clothing when he arrived.
2. Ignorance of the Situation in Ukraine
Their total lack of understanding was evident as they dismissed Ukraine’s urgent pleas for support and downplayed the severity of the war, not just on Ukraine but the world.
When challenged, Vance explained that his superior knowledge to Zelentsky about Ukraine came from watching TV and reading news stories. Truth doesn't matter in the administration.
3. Deference to Russia
They openly echoed Kremlin-friendly narratives, pressuring Zelensky to consider terms that would benefit Putin rather than Ukraine.
Some US commentators have argued that the US is shaping up to being on the wrong side of World War Three.
4. Silence on the Evils of Putin
Trump and Vance refused to acknowledge or condemn Putin’s aggression, sidestepping any criticism of his actions while accusing Zelensky instead.
5. Intolerance of Anyone Else’s Opinions
They shut down opposing views, making it clear that only their perspective mattered, leaving no room for meaningful discussion.
America is a great nation with a proud history. This is a shameful episode.
I've dealt with a few bullies in my time – political, educational, and legal – and the Trump/Vance onslaught against President Zelenskyy was textbook bullying. They patronised, humiliated, and fabricated in order to bolster their personal prestige and egos. Appalling behaviour.
Lots of MPs voted for the bill at 2nd reading in the expectation that there would be stronger safeguards added at committee stage… and yet we now see that even the weak safeguards that existed, are being dropped.
