For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) process pain.

The findings indicate that crustaceans may be capable of experiencing pain similar to vertebrates.

Using electrodes placed on crab shells, scientists measured the crabs’ brain activity in response to painful stimuli, including vinegar applied to soft tissues and mechanical prodding.

The study found that the crabs' central nervous systems responded differently depending on the type and severity of the stimulus, indicating a more complex recognition of harm than previously understood.

These findings challenge long-held assumptions that crustaceans only react to pain reflexively and highlight the need for improved animal welfare practices in the seafood industry. As crabs and other crustaceans, like shrimp and lobsters, likely share similar nervous systems, researchers argue that current methods of killing and preparing these animals—such as boiling them alive—may cause undue suffering.

The study’s authors hope these results will lead to the development of more humane practices, ensuring that the creatures endure minimal pain while supporting ethical consumption. The research, published in Biology, underscores the importance of reevaluating how humans interact with marine life.
