RUSSIA TESTS ORESHNIK MISSILE IN SHOW OF FORCE — EUROPE WATCHES CLOSELY

MOSCOW — Russia has highlighted its Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile as a major component of its strategic deterrence arsenal. A launch or military exercise involving the system would draw close attention across Europe because of its range, speed and ability to carry multiple warheads.

Russian officials have portrayed Oreshnik as a weapon capable of reaching targets deep inside Europe, while European governments have closely monitored Moscow's missile deployments amid heightened tensions with NATO.

The launch would send a clear military signal, but it would not by itself establish that Russia intends to attack Europe.
