Earlier this week, Mayor Sim and the ABC team stood with local businesses and community members against the opening of an OPS at 900 Helmcken, calling for an end to years of failed Provincial policies on mental health and addictions.
Your ABC team is working to make Vancouver a safer city. That starts with making sure the most vulnerable members of our community have access to appropriate treatment and care.
While the Province has paused plans to open the OPS on June 1st, we will continue to stand with Vancouverites to ensure their voices are heard.
British Columbians are practical people. They donโt expect government to solve every problem, but to focus on the things that matter: safe communities, reliable public services, and an economy that creates opportunity and a rising standard of living that lifts all boats.
Political leadership that is consumed by ideology, partisanship, and narrow appeals to issues that make not a lick of difference to quality of life, but are intend to distract and enrage do a disservice to the people and wonโt make it very far. In fact, itโs part of the reason we are plagued by the same challenges year over year, decade over decade.
We need to firmly turn the page on this era, and leave it behind.
Former addicts say there is no recovery without accountability. But Sacramento thinks drug-free sober living communities are cruel. Make it make sense.
Barring state dollars from funding abstinence-based housing while using them to fund needle exchange is cruel. And until we make a change, people will continue to overdose on our streets and in our shelters.
As governor, I will sign legislation to fund recovery housing and build out a shelter system that gets everyone indoors and on a pathway to something better โ for their good and the good of the broader community.
People really underestimate how much tech expansion is happening in Vancouver right now. Could we do more. Hell yes. And we will.
In just the last year or so:
- Netflix opened a massive 110,000 sq ft animation/VFX campus in Mount Pleasant (450+ staff, Eyeline VFX joining)
- Amazon completed its move into The Post โ now fully occupying all 1.1M sq ft
- ILM opened a new 40,000 sq ft studio at The Stack, now 950+ staff, their largest office globally
- Sony Imageworks moved its global HQ into The Post
- Databricks opened a Vancouver R&D centre (a $100B+ AI company)
- Workday signed an anchor lease at 601 West Hastings, their first major Vancouver office
- Asana expanded into 601 West Hastings too
- Boomi opened a 54,000 sq ft Centre of Excellence at Bentall Centre
- Autodesk opened its first permanent West Coast office
- Wayve launched a Vancouver AI/autonomous systems hub
- Gumloop reopened a Vancouver office (after moving HQ to SF)
- Quandri opened a new 15,000 sq ft HQ
- Sanctuary AI continues building humanoid robots here
Vancouver is quietly becoming one of North America's biggest AI, VFX, gaming and creative tech hubs.
Mayor @DanielLurie's turnaround of San Francisco is an inspiration for all West Coast cities, which tend to have similar problems of homelessness and disorder. Lurie has the advantage of billions of dollars of AI investment pouring in, but he's a beacon for West Coast Democrats.
BC just leveled up! The new AI data centres in Vancouver and Kamloops are a total game-changer for our tech ecosystem and local jobs. This is the future and the path to a stronger, more modern economy. #BCForward#AI#FutureIsHere#vanpoli
The previous OPS sites on Seymour and Howe became focal points for street disorder and open drug use.
Rather than continuing to push failed approaches, we need the Province to get people off the streets and into the care they need.
Vancouverites deserve better, everyone deserves better.
We need to use every tool in the toolbox to block the newly proposed OPS at 900 Helmcken.
That's why today, I'm bringing forward an urgent motion that would direct City staff to take all lawful steps available to prevent this new OPS from opening.
Vancouver will not support failed approaches, and our city won't see meaningful change or progress until the Premier follows through on his commitment of 400 mandatory care beds.
To date, Vancouver has yet to see a single bed.

"This is the first synthetic species,โ microbiologist J. Craig Venter told 60 Minutesโ Steve Kroft in 2010. His team of scientists created a synthetic bacteria designed on a computer, with man-made DNA. Venter says that from concept to completion, it took 15 years and $40 million to make.
Venter, who died this week at 79, was one of the most famous scientists in the world, known for his pioneering work in deciphering the human genetic code.

Todayโs the day. I am proud to announce the release of THC INC, a deep dive into the marijuana industry and the fallout from legalized marijuana across the country.
Hear directly from those who have suffered the most because of the industry's lies. Parents, children, and others share their stories and discuss the reality of legalization in America today.
