Great piece that provides a lot of insight into Finland's ability to build icebreakers efficiently (and why it will be difficult to replicate in the US).
History made on the highway
For the first time, U.S. Marine Corps F-35Bs have transformed a public highway in Finland into a fully operational airstrip. This is Agile Combat Employment—a critical capability that proves our Alliance can project lethal combat power from anywhere.
@OldSaltCityAce Gulf Copper will continue the restoration of the Battleship Texas. There’s links to some good information about her, along with photos and videos, in the article.

On June 1, Davie Defense broke ground on its planned infrastructure improvements (up to $1 billion) at Gulf Copper in Galveston and Port Artur, TX.
This is more than just the start of infrastructure improvements, as the local economy is already stepping up and providing funds for worker training and additional facilities to support Gulf Copper and further maritime investment.
The first phase of the infrastructure work at Gulf Copper is scheduled to wrap up in early 2028, when production work will begin on the Arctic Security Cutters that will be “Born on the Island.”
Meanwhile, production on the two Finnish built ASCs will begin at Gulf Copper’s sister shipyards very soon.
Momentum is building!

Blue bags up.
Japan 2, Netherlands 2 — an absolute thriller in Arlington. And then the real show started.
The Japanese end pulls out thousands of bright blue bags. First they wave them like flags, bouncing and chanting until the whole section is one giant wall of blue. Then — same bags, new mission. They fan out across the stands and scoop up every bottle, wrapper and cup till the seats look brand new.
And who's right in the middle of it, grinning with a bag in his hand? Jameis Winston. Giants QB. Heisman winner. Out there cleaning up with the Samurai Blue like it's the best gig of his summer.
No chore. No lecture. Just a party that cleans up after itself.
Best fans on the planet. 🇯🇵💙

This year’s icebreaking season was challenging for the U.S. Coast Guard because of the weather and the resources available. Even with those challenges, they kept goods flowing in the Great Lakes, the Northeast, and even the Chesapeake Bay (which saw unusual ice this past winter).

Big news- Davie Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard have finalized their contract to build five much needed icebreakers!
Construction of the ASCs will start this summer in Finland, with delivery of the first PC3 Arctic Security Cutter for the U.S. Coast Guard in 2028.
Two will be built in Finland and three in the United States at Gulf Copper's shipbuilding facilities in Texas.
Davie Defense is investing up to $1B in the U.S. Maritime Industrial Base to support construction of three of these ASCs at Gulf Copper. Groundbreaking scheduled for 01 June.
I expect lots of news concerning icebreaker construction this summer. Be sure to click through and subscribe to my Substack newsletter so that you don't miss any important updates.
