Next month marks 2.5 years since our daughter, then 11 years old, was subjected to a racial slur during a minor league hockey game. For 2.5 years, we've been seeking answers and accountability from the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (@OWHAhockey ), Ontario Hockey Federation (@OHFHockey ), and most recently, Hockey Canada (@HockeyCanada) but instead have received mostly silence and the actions that have taken place are contrary to what the leagues advertise as a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.
After filing an OWHA complaint, an OHF and Hockey Canada appeal, two investigations and two “Final Reports”, all we are left with is the affirmation that Hockey’s racist past remains its racist present. Rather than contributing to the solution for addressing anti-Black racism in hockey, the OWHA leadership has shown themselves to be a significant part of the problem. They remain disconnected from the ongoing changes in both the sport and society and have purposely overlooked rules and procedures designed to prevent anti-Black racial discrimination. This is not a one-time isolated procedural error by a single individual, but rather a pattern of discrimination enacted by a group of OWHA leaders.
During this entire process, the OHF leadership has continually chosen not to engage with us, remaining silent. Meanwhile, Hockey Canada has preferred to support their member organizations in this matter rather than serve as an impartial arbitrator, opting to defer the issue to external bodies instead of addressing the internal problems of racism within their member associations.
The process for handling incidents of anti-Black discrimination has proven to be fundamentally flawed at best and, at worst, a complete failure, and a fraud. I have attached a recent letter sent to the Hockey Canada President and Board of Directors, detailing some of the events that have transpired over the past 2.5 years and our intended course of action moving forward.
I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to review this lengthy post. The time has come to broaden this conversation. I’m open to ideas that will lead to positive change and willing to discuss this issue with anyone who has questions or wishes to better understand what has occurred. I encourage others to reach out to the OWHA, OHF, and Hockey Canada in pursuit of answers and accountability. Please be aware that the leagues may attempt to justify their lack of transparency by citing the ongoing complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario or claiming that privacy concerns regarding the individuals involved prevent them from discussing the matter. Regardless, the era of Hockey’s silence and inaction as a response to racism must come to an end.

Thanks, @staffieri_mark and @WHLOfficial, for keeping the conversation going about systemic racism in hockey. Your willingness to share our experience and offer suggestions for improvement, rather than stay silent like so many others, means a lot. #HockeyForAll#EndRacismInHockey
At a time when inclusion and anti-bullying are emphasized in so many conversations, there is a thin line between sincerity and being disingenuous. One segment of society where this line can occasionally be blurred is sport....

Despite repeated inquiries over several months, I've received no response from you. My daughter was the target of a racial slur during a minor hockey game.
@OWHAhockey has repeatedly chosen to support and defend the parties involved, despite their actions being linked to racially discriminatory behaviour.
@OHFHockey has chosen silence to defend the parties involved, despite their actions being linked to racially discriminatory behaviour. Do you endorse the actions of these "Provincial Sports Organizations"? Will you support us in demonstrating true 'Zero Tolerance for Racism' through decisive action? #HockeyTwitter #endracism
Thank you @BrownRecord for shedding light on this incident. @OWHAhockey, @OHFHockey and @HockeyCanada claim to provide a safe, inclusive environment but often fall short and revert to disturbing old ways when it comes to doing the right thing for ALL players and families. #Hockey #Canada #AccountabilityMatters #SafeSport #EndRacism
“This secrecy drives me nuts. What is the point of all of this, of having a proper complaint process and months-long investigations if we are not going to make these sanctions public and give parents information about people who have been disciplined for their behaviour?" 💯👏
When the WHL's Hurricanes announced the hiring of disgraced former-Flames coach Bill Peters, it was the latest indication of hockey's failure to learn the price of putting the pursuit success before the value of human beings, writes @SachdevaSonny. https://t.co/JbzunQAkpT

Great question. The NHL has done nothing. They wanted a PR Stunt to show up the announcement of the @TheOfficialHDA and to pretend they care, while actually working against change. Performative action - we called it out then and it still rings true today.
@WalderSports Are the Raps looking to compete with anyone? Why trade OG for draft picks? So they can draft a shutdown defender that shoots 3s? Since the Raps existence, how many players have had his skillset & why do teams want him? Unless it's a Kawhi-like trade, I hope he stays.
Hockey Equality Accountability Project helps families, teams, and organizations address incidents of racial discrimination and maltreatment. We advocate for victims and their families helping them through the process and provide resources to thoroughly address these issues.
I just heard from a young Black kid playing in the GTHL. Last game he was called a N***er.His teammate of Asian descent tried to stand up for him and was called an Asian slur. The # of times I & other members of the HDA have had these types convos is sickening. When does it end!?
