Map of raw sewage releases into the river #Stour in #Canterbury in 2023, using @EnvAgency data from storm-sewage overflows. Given the frequency and length of spills from the Westbere overflow, it's no wonder #Stodmarsh NNR is a mess.
City councillors have this evening unanimously voted that the council declares its recognition of the global biodiversity emergency and the local impact this could have on the communities and businesses we serve. Read more at https://t.co/cbmnYMHDb4 (item 9a).
Delighted to see a unanimous vote to declare a biodiversity emergency in Canterbury - well done Cllr Mel Dawkins for all her work over the years towards this @theMelzebra
We caught up with Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity Mel Dawkins to find out why tonight's council debate to declare a biodiversity emergency is so important to Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay
Having considered all the implications of a motion to declare one, the council’s Cabinet has this evening agreed a motion to request that the Council declares a Biodiversity Emergency at its next meeting on 19 October. 🌲🌳🦅🌻
It is so important that local government works to preserve nature and biodiversity at a time when the central government seems to be working against it.
Tonight I will be speaking to support the #BiodiversityEmergencyDeclaration
The #StateofNature report is a stark reminder that politicians must not let nature drop down the agenda!
We need policies that properly fund:
🌳Nature-friendly farming
❌End poisoning of lakes & rivers
🌻More nature in urban areas

A big thank you to all the families who helped to plant several thousand daffodil bulbs along the Kingsmead Road this morning as part of the launch of Riverside. #Canterbury's ring road should look a lot more cheerful next spring!
Help us to brighten up the Kingsmead Road! Drop by between 11am & 1pm tomorrow (Sunday 2 October) at the launch of Canterbury's Riverside to plant a '@CurzonCbury Popcorn Punnet of Daffodils'!
The latest State of Nature report tells us the clock is ticking.
It's time for politicians across the political spectrum to stand up for nature - action must start now before it's too late.

The winning entries of the Great Stour Photographic Competition are now up on display at Canterbury Riverside to mark its launch this weekend. Many thanks to @Martynbarr and congratulations to @dhtabor & all the other winners. @canterburycc@KentishGazette@KentishStourCP
I’ll be joining my @BumblebeeTrust colleagues & other nature organisations today in London to stand up for nature. Please #RestoreNatureNow 🐛🐌🐞🐜🐝🪱🦉🐋🦔🌱🍄🌳🦭🦀🐍🪳🪲
How many more dire warnings do we need about nature's spiralling decline before councils across the country start considering the adoption of a Biodiversity Emergency Declaration?
Will keep backing 20% biodiversity net gain as the minimum we should be doing to protect nature across the UK's open spaces, countryside, coast and wildlife. This is a really important plank of policy to support and protect our rural communities.
Nice coverage on the letter's page of today's @KentishGazette about last week's Great Stour Riverfest organised jointly by @canterburycc and local community groups. Planning for the Great Stour Riverfest 2024 will begin in the coming weeks! @CharloCornell@KentishStourCP
