Since October 2025, residents of Bille Kingdom in Rivers State have been living through what can only be described as an environmental and public health disaster.

It began with fishermen reporting bubbling water and a strong sulphurous smell in rivers and mangrove swamps. Within days, similar leaks appeared across the community, including inside the town itself. Today, methane continues to bubble from rivers, swamps and drinking wells, contaminating water sources and putting thousands of lives at risk.

In December 2025, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) conducted air-quality tests. According to Amnesty International, one test recorded methane concentrations approximately 10,000 times higher than normal background levels. Yet months later, the full findings have not been publicly released, and residents say the leaks remain unresolved.

This is not happening in isolation. Bille sits in the heart of the Niger Delta, surrounded by decades-old oil and gas infrastructure. The community has already spent years dealing with oil pollution, destroyed mangroves, contaminated waterways and declining livelihoods. Now, an active methane leak has compounded an already devastating environmental crisis.

The human cost is enormous. Residents report contaminated drinking water, illness, respiratory concerns, vomiting among children, disrupted schooling, and the collapse of fishing, the primary source of income for many families. These are not abstract environmental statistics; they are daily realities for thousands of Nigerians.

Access to clean water, health, and a safe environment are fundamental rights. The people of Bille deserve more than investigations without answers. They deserve immediate containment of the leak, transparent publication of all findings, independent scientific assessments, safe drinking water, medical support, and full environmental remediation.

We cannot continue to treat environmental disasters in the Niger Delta as normal. Bille deserves urgency. Bille deserves justice. Nigeria cannot afford to look away.
