Emefiele:  Supreme Court Affirms Final Forfeiture of  Properties,  $2 Million, Share Certificates to Government

The Supreme Court on Friday, July 17, 2026 affirmed the final forfeiture of seven landed properties, the sum of $2,045,000 (Two Million, Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars) and share certificates linked to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by a five-member panel of the apex court led by Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Saulawa, the court set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal and affirmed the decision of the Federal High Court, Lagos, which had ordered the final forfeiture of the assets on the grounds that they were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.

Following the final forfeiture order made by the Federal High Court, Emefiele challenged the decision before the Court of Appeal, which reversed the judgment of the trial court.

Dissatisfied with the appellate court's decision, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, approached the Supreme Court, which has now restored and affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court.

The forfeited properties are:

A fully detached duplex of identical structures situated at No. 17B Hakeem Odumosu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos;

An undeveloped parcel of land measuring 1,919.592 square metres, covered by Survey Plan No. DS/LS/340, situated at Oyinkan Abayomi Drive (formerly Queens Drive), Ikoyi, Lagos;

A bungalow situated at No. 65A Oyinkan Abayomi Drive (formerly Queens Drive), Ikoyi, Lagos;

A four-bedroom duplex situated at 12A Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos;

An industrial complex under construction on 22 plots of land in Agbor, Delta State;

Eight units of undetached apartments on a plot measuring 2,457.60 square metres, situated at No. 8A Adekunle Lawal Road, Ikoyi, Lagos;

A full duplex together with all its appurtenances on a plot measuring 2,217.87 square metres, situated at 2A Bank Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The apex court also ordered the forfeiture of $2,045,000 (Two Million, Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars) and share certificates of Queensdorf Global Fund Limited to the Federal Government.

The final forfeiture order was originally granted on November 1, 2024, by Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos in Suit No. FHC/L/MISC/500/24, following an application filed by the EFCC through its counsel, Director, Public Prosecution, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and Section 44(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The application, brought as an action in rem, sought the final forfeiture of properties reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.    The application for the forfeiture was supported by an affidavit deposed to by David Jayeoba, an investigating officer with the EFCC, who averred that investigations revealed that the assets were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.

In its originating motion, the Commission urged the court to grant the final forfeiture under the provisions of Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, contending that the assets were liable to forfeiture because they were reasonably suspected to have been acquired through unlawful means.

With the Supreme Court's unanimous decision affirming the judgment of the Federal High Court, the final forfeiture of the seven landed properties, the $2.045 million and the share certificates to the Federal Government of Nigeria has now been conclusively upheld.

FG HAILS SUCCESSFUL NECO CBT ROLLOUT, ASSURES NO STUDENT WILL BE LEFT BEHIND

The Federal Government has commended the successful rollout of the National Examinations Council (NECO) Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), describing it as a major milestone in strengthening examination integrity and advancing digital transformation in education.

Speaking after monitoring the examination in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise, noting the absence of technical disruptions and the positive response from candidates. She said the CBT format enhances examination credibility by randomising questions, reducing opportunities for malpractice and promoting merit-based assessment.

Professor Ahmad reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to expanding CBT nationwide through a gradual and inclusive approach, assuring Nigerians that no student would be disadvantaged due to inadequate infrastructure or limited access to technology. She disclosed that the Ministry is working with the National Assembly, state governments and private sector partners to strengthen nationwide CBT infrastructure.

NECO Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, revealed that 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 SSCE, including over 700,000 female candidates, and announced that results are expected by the first week of September 2026 or earlier.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology to improve examination integrity, learning outcomes and build a globally competitive education system.

The Unending Killings in Benue and Plateau- Worrisome.

The tragic news of yet another round of killings in Benue and Plateau States is both painful and deeply disturbing. The reported murder of at least sixteen innocent Nigerians in the Otukpo-Nobi community of Benue State, alongside the horrific killing of nine members of the same family, a two-month-old baby, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, once again reminds us that the relentless cycle of bloodshed in parts of our country has persisted for far too long.

For years, families in Benue, Plateau and other communities across Nigeria have lived under the constant shadow of fear, violence and displacement. Mothers have buried their children, children have become orphans overnight, farmers have abandoned their lands, and entire communities have been left devastated. We cannot continue to accept this tragic cycle as though it were normal. It is not.

The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Every Nigerian life is sacred, and every life lost is one too many. These are not mere statistics; they are fathers, mothers, children, breadwinners and future leaders whose dreams have been violently cut short.

The time has come to move beyond routine condemnations after every attack. Nigerians deserve a security architecture that is proactive rather than reactive, driven by intelligence, rapid response and accountability. Those responsible for these atrocities must be identified, arrested and prosecuted. The culture of impunity must end.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and to the governments and people of Benue and Plateau States. I pray that God grants comfort to all who mourn, healing to the injured, and strength to every community struggling to rebuild after these repeated tragedies.

This is not about politics; it is about humanity. We must summon the collective will to secure our nation and restore hope to our people. No country can develop when its citizens live in fear, and no society can prosper when innocent blood continues to flow unchecked.
