@alexloiz@nathanbenaich The former, but enabled through the latter. Universities support work at early stages an investor wouldn't touch. They are charities and reinvest every penny in the next generation of research and teaching.
@nathanbenaich We need to recognise that founders benefit from University support structures that enable their work, providing salaries, support for research, infrastructure, administration, networks, patent filing. Returns from the few pay the costs of the many and support the next generation.

Our universities are often criticised for being great at research, but not at commercialisation. Last year Oxford spinouts alone raised £1bn in capital. In 2018, U.K. spinouts collectively raised £1.5bn. Huge untapped econ potential at our universities to help rebuild post covid.
