@Jeamille24@davids99us Thanks Jennifer - Hearing that means a great deal to us at this time. I have shared it with our family including his two daughters who were young when he wrote the book. I am sure it will make them feel proud of their Dad. Kind regards
My brother, David Stockwell, PhD @davids99us passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer.
A pioneer in Ecosystems Dynamics, his PhD at Australian National University was titled "Machine Learning and the Problem of Prediction and Explanation in Ecological Modelling."
@davids99us His Google Scholar profile records over 7,900 citations. Active on X/Twitter and enthusiastic adopter of AI/Grok he was intellectually curious to the end.
Much loved missed by all his family and friends.
@davids99us GARP uses an evolutionary algorithm to model ecological niche of species, creating a reliable method for species predictions using small sets of ad hoc data. It became a widely used species distribution modelling tool in ecology and conservation biology in the 1990s and 2000s.
He later authored Niche Modeling: Predictions from Statistical Distributions (2007).
His defining scientific contribution was the development of GARP (Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production), created with I.R. Noble in 1992.
