Well, there goes one of Twitter’s favourite memes — that uniquely among major economies of the G7 the UK was the only economy not to have returned to its pre-pandemic size. How often have you seen that point made, often gleefully.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says the data on which it was based was inaccurate and has now been revised. The UK economy shrank less than thought during the pandemic, and returned to pre-Covid levels almost two years ago: GDP was 0.6% higher than before Covid in the last quarter of 2021, not 1.2% smaller. Oh dear.
I’m sure that will shortly be leading the FT and the BBC.
Interesting to see the salary scales. One estimate I heard for private work a few years ago when I worked in the NHS was £200k.
