One 17th-century man born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, connects the first American Pope to Madonna, Justin Bieber, Hillary Clinton, two Canadian prime ministers, and Jack Kerouac.
Henry Louis Gates Jr., the Harvard historian behind PBS’s Finding Your Roots, traced Pope Leo XIV’s ancestry back to his 12th great-grandparents for a New York Times investigation published shortly after the pontiff’s election. Working with genealogists from American Ancestors and the Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami, Gates found that Leo, born Robert Francis Prevost, shares a common ancestor, Louis Boucher de Grandpré, with Madonna, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, Justin and Pierre Trudeau, and Jack Kerouac, making him roughly a ninth cousin to each, at various removes. Gates noted the math behind why this isn’t as improbable as it sounds: trace anyone back to their 12th great-grandparents, and you’re looking at 32,766 ancestors, more than enough branches to eventually cross paths with fame.
The deeper story Gates uncovered was about geography and migration rather than celebrity trivia. Much of Leo’s heritage traces to Louisiana Creole roots in New Orleans, layered with French, Italian, Spanish, and Cuban lines, some ancestors moving to Quebec in the 1650s before eventually settling in America. Of the relatives Gates identified, 40 were born in France, 24 in Italy, 21 in Spain, 22 in the United States, and others across Cuba, Canada, Haiti, and Guadeloupe, a family tree that reads like a map of centuries of transatlantic movement. The investigation also found 17 of Leo’s ancestors were Black, and a dozen were slaveholders, both sitting inside the same bloodline as the celebrity connections drawing headlines.
The Madonna link carries its own irony. She publicly asked Pope Francis to “meet up” in 2021, joking about her three alleged excommunications from the Church. Six years later, genealogists confirmed she and the current Pope are cousins, a connection neither party arranged and neither could have predicted.
