In 2023, Porsha Ngumezi and her husband, Hope, were expecting their third child in Texas. They had two kids previously with no complications. When it became clear she was miscarrying, her mother-in-law, a former doctor, advised that she needed a dilation and curettage to stop the bleeding. Worse, she had a blood-clotting disorder, complicating the situation further. Because of the state’s abortion ban, the hospital was hesitant to perform the procedure — D&Cs are also used to end pregnancies, and staff feared they could be held liable. Instead, they gave her misoprostol. Hours later, her heart stopped. Now, Hope is raising their two boys as a single father and is speaking out in memory of his wife, in what he says was a ‘preventable’ tragedy.
