Johannes Diderik van der Waals, born #OnThisDay in 1837, was a prominent Dutch physicist renowned for his groundbreaking work in the understanding of the properties of gases and liquids. His most notable contribution is the Van der Waals equation of state, which improved upon the ideal gas law by accounting for the finite size of molecules and their intermolecular attractions, leading to the concept of Van der Waals forces.
These insights were pivotal in explaining the continuous transition between liquid and gas states, and his theories on the critical point in thermodynamics were revolutionary. His contributions significantly advanced the field of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, earning him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1910.
Aharonov-Bohm Effect:
This quantum mechanical phenomenon shows that an electrically charged particle can be affected by an electromagnetic field, even if the particle travels through a region in which both the magnetic field and electric field are zero. This challenges the classical notion that fields only affect particles through direct contact.

This year’s #NobelPrize laureate in physics Anne L’Huillier discovered that many different overtones of light arose when she transmitted infrared laser light through a noble gas.
Each overtone is a light wave with a given number of cycles for each cycle in the laser light. They are caused by the laser light interacting with atoms in the gas; it gives some electrons extra energy that is then emitted as light. L’Huillier has continued to explore this phenomenon, laying the ground for subsequent breakthroughs.
