I was at a restaurant with my younger brother last weekend.
While we were eating, I noticed a little boy at the next table. He couldn’t have been more than seven. He kept staring at our food, not out of rudeness, just quiet curiosity.
A few minutes later, the waiter arrived at his table with only a bottle of water.
No food.
The boy smiled and said, “Thank you,” as if that was exactly what he had ordered.
Something about that broke me.
So I called the waiter and paid for a plate of rice and chicken for him.
When the food arrived, his eyes lit up, but what he did next surprised me.
He didn’t eat immediately.
He carefully packed half of it into a small nylon bag he had with him.
I asked him why.
He said, “It’s for my sister at home. She hasn’t eaten today.”
I just sat there, unable to speak.
In that moment, I realised something:
Some people are not hungry because they lack food.
They’re hungry because they’re trying to ensure someone else doesn’t feel the same hunger.
