Yesterday I smoked weed for the first time in my life and I swear I felt like I was not physically existing, as if I had merged into the universe. even saw many different things.
Thích Quảng Đức, the Vietnamese monk who set himself ablaze to protest the government's Catholic-favoring policies, remained seated in the lotus posture (padmāsana), throughout the self-immolation.
-Remained upright without attempting to escape.
-Kept his hands in a meditation mudrā.
-Showed little or no outward sign of panic or struggle.
-Appeared to remain in meditative composure until he lost consciousness.
His act marked a turning point in the Buddhist crisis, leading ultimately to the government’s collapse. A spectacular monument now stands near the site of his sacrifice.
I was reminded of this incident in history as the Bhikku I spoke to in Bodh Gaya said that Vietnamese monks are extremely disciplined in their practice. Especially Ven. Thích Quảng Đức here, I am quite sure, was an advanced Bodhisattva - no less than a 8th to 10th Bhumi. These Bodhisattvas are also known as Avaivartya Bodhisattvas (irreversible Bodhisattvas i.e. their Buddhahood is guaranteed and they do not regress back to lower Bhumis). Also to note is that the Bodhisattvas in the Jatakas can only be an Avaivartya Bodhisattva - which is why you read them making extreme sacrifices.
