Tendulkar was a true great, but played for an increasingly self confident country on its way to becoming a cultural and economic superpower.
For most of his career Sunil Gavaskar batted for the self respect of a third world country and its despairing middle class whose ultimate ambition was a government job or a green card. The Sehwags, Gangulys and Dhonis who followed have given us ample reason to celebrate, but for most of his cricketing career Sunil Gavaskar would just make sure that millions could get up and face their bus or train commute the next morning.
Happy birthday Sunil Gavaskar.
You were the original rock.
Congratulations to Praggnanandhaa for this remarkable feat!
This is indeed an incredible milestone that highlights his continued excellence.
My best wishes to him for his future endeavours.

VIDEO | Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant shares comic stories and anecdotes from courtroom during book release function of Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta.
He says, "Reading these two books back to back is like binging a courtroom drama that accidentally wandered into a stand-up special. As I flip through the pages of these two books, I ended up with one question: how on earth did Tushar Bhai find the time to pen these jarring times in the first place? So I try to solve this mystery: either Tushar Bhai has successfully petitioned the Almighty for a twenty-fifth hour in the day, and kept it just to himself."

He could speak 8 languages and they said he could recite all 37 of Shakespeare's plays from memory. An award winning playwright & stage artist and one of Satyajit Ray's favourite actors.
Also one of India's finest comic actors in films like Golmaal, and Hirak Rajar Deshe. The irony is that the marvellous comic roles in Golmaal and other films, what most people outside remember him for, is what he regarded as the least important "I have developed a technique of shutting my mind off, switching it off, rather. I will not be able to tell you even the names of the films I have acted in or even the name of the character I have just finished shooting.”
He was also a brilliant writer & regular theatre reviewer. “Mr.Dutt as Othello was rather a pitiable sight, with his voice gone, his breathing laboured and his bulk enormous.” This was Utpal Dutt reviewing his own stage performance using the pseudonym Iago.
He also loved classical art and there is this wonderful story told by his daughter. "When we went to Italy, it meant we would have to spend at least one day on viewing each sculpture. We had hired the services of a guide. But, we found that Baba knew more about the place than the guide. The next day, the guide asked us if we would be ready to go on our own."
A true renaissance man and a principled one, not scared to go to prison for his views. Utpal Dutt was truly one of our greats.
97th birth anniversary today.
Einstein's birthday, and Pi Day today. Because March 14 is written as 3.14 in the US, the first 3 numbers in the irrational number Pi.
And what could be more irrational than thinking that, exactly 25 years ago, two batters could last through the whole day and lead India to one of the greatest ever test victories against the Australian juggernaut.
March 14th, Einstein Day, Pi Day, & Dravid and Laxman Day!
25 years ago at Eden Gardens Rahul and I shared a partnership that will forever remain special. In a moment when the game looked beyond us we chose belief, patience and resilience. That stand was not just about runs but was about trust, teamwork and fighting for every session. Grateful to have shared that journey with Rahul and to be part of a Test that reminded us all that in cricket comebacks are always possible👍 @BCCI #PowerOfPartnership #Believe #Resilience
When it comes to foreign policy, we should always support our country's interests. It may or may not be the "right" thing according to personal preferences. The narratives may or may not be true. We may or may not like our government or their politics.
But for geopolitics we must learn to put our country's interests first. Especially during conflicts and war, there's no better duty as a citizen than to support our country, its government, and its armed forces. Politics and personal preferences must be kept away.
Because the adversaries use exactly these two to influence public opinion and interfere in democracies to arm twist the country's policies and actions. They use us and our minds as a malleable tool in controlling the country.
We should not allow that. So in this middle east war, look at your country's long term interests in the region, and if the government's actions align in protecting those interests and you. If so, support your government and take their stance. As simple as that.
Congratulations to the Jammu and Kashmir team for their first ever Ranji Trophy win! This historic triumph reflects remarkable grit, discipline and passion of the team. It is a proud moment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and it highlights the growing sporting passion and talent there. May this feat inspire many young athletes to dream big and play more.
Almost 2000 years before Leibniz, the binary system was already developed by Pingala in India who used Zero & One to represent Sanskrit poetic meters. It later spread to China via Buddhism and its Sanskrit sutras. Interesting to note Leibniz was expert in both Sanskrit & Chinese.
I see a lot of Indians share Chinese propaganda of their robots, AI, and tech while also questioning and demeaning India saying "we can't do these things."
But what they don't tell you is China did what it is showing off by a systematic "take and improvise" approach. State level, highly sophisticated hacking and copying is done from around the world.
Let me tell you how it works.
The tech taken hook or crook is then put in a central repository. Many companies are subsidized and incentivized by the state to take the tech and knowhow to build equivalent products matching international innovation.
Be it smartphones then (Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus) or robotics now, the story is the same. Tech is taken from Chinese infiltrated universities and companies. But I am not discrediting China for their own innovation and improvisation on what they take from the world.
I even appreciate the Chinese - you go tell any Chinese citizen that "this display tech is originally from Sony" or "that telecom tech is from the UK." They will immediately retort "it is not." They will defend until you can prove it. But once you prove it, they will say "So what? Japan colonized us, the UK destroyed us."
This kind of attitude and culture empowers them. Compare this to Indians. We are highly political in thinking. So half of us will always fight our own govt and try to pull any initiative down for political satisfaction. The rest half can also be easily blackpilled by amplifying small issues.
Ultimately, a big demographic dividend of India's youth are disillusioned just by propaganda and it prevents us from innovating and improvising. Also we do not have such state level programs of hacking, infiltrating, copying, or stealing to get tech and do stuff using them. It's going to take time.
From nuclear tech to rocketry, to jet engines to AI, we have to start from scratch and do it. There's no F-22 clone J-20, or OpenAI clone DeepSeek, or Boston Dynamics clone robotics. So whenever you share something from China and ask "what is India doing" - remember two things:
- What you have shared is already there somewhere in the world, mostly the west. And at a much more advanced level. India can always buy that.
- You are being driven to share and disillusion yourself and fellow Indians. The pessimistic posts will not help India. Rather encouraging posts urging focus or investments on those areas will.
My Demand: Make Long Term Capital Gain TAX on Equities NIL for individual investor.
I welcome the hike in STT (security transaction tax) on derivatives as it can curb reckless speculation. Nearly 90% of retail investors lose money in F&O, turning markets into gambling.
When STT was originally introduced, LTCG was zero. But now with both STT and LTCG in place, investors are disincentivised.
I urge the govt to abolish LTCG on equities for individuals, as done in Switzerland, Singapore, UAE & others. This will boost household wealth, reduce speculation, and shift savings from gold & real estate into equities.
India is working on all 5 layers of the AI architecture: application, model, chip, infra and energy. We are building the foundation for global AI services.

#BREAKING: India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Davos strongly counters IMF Chief for calling India a second-tier AI power:
“I don't know what the IMF criteria is but Stanford places India at 3rd in the world for AI preparedness. I don't think your classification is correct.”
