Lacan’a göre insan, her şey yolunda giderken değişmez.
Look at what's under His feet.
Stones. Hundreds of them. Grey, rounded, scattered across the whole foreground of the painting, the exact size and shape of loaves of bread.
That's the first temptation, lying all around Him for forty days.
Matthew 4:3. If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Not a stone. These stones. The ones right there. The devil pointed at the ground.
Kramskoi painted the wilderness floor so you'd feel what that was like. Everywhere He looks, for six weeks, the ground is covered in something that looks like food and isn't.
Now notice who isn't in the painting.
There's no devil. No horns, no shadow, no serpent, no figure at the edge of the frame. Ivan Kramskoi spent more than a decade on this picture; he abandoned an entire first version, changed the format, finished it in Crimea waking before dawn to work, and when he was done there was nothing in it but a man, a rock, and an empty country.
He said it plainly in a letter to the writer Garshin: there comes a moment in every life where a man decides whether to go right or left, whether to sell God for a rouble or refuse to give evil one step.
That's what he painted. Not the fight. The deciding.
And look at His hands.
Locked together. Fingers interlaced, gripping, knuckles pressed. Not folded in prayer - clenched. The whole painting's tension is in those hands.
Bare feet on jagged rock. Dark wrap, a sliver of red tunic beneath. Thin. One critic at the time said the figure looks shrunken, not from hunger, but from the pressure of what's happening inside it.
And the light is behind Him, low on the horizon. It's dawn. He has been sitting there all night, and the sun is only now coming up.
Now go back to how He got there.
Mark 1:11. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
That's the baptism. The sky opens, the Spirit descends like a dove, the Father speaks out loud.
The very next verse.
Mark 1:12. And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
Immediately.
And that word driveth - the Greek is ekballō. It's the same word Mark uses when Jesus casts out demons. To throw out. To expel with force.
The Spirit didn't suggest the wilderness. The Spirit threw Him into it.
Read the order again, because it's the thing most people have backwards.
The voice came first. Then the desert.
He didn't go into the wilderness because He failed. He didn't go because He sinned, or drifted, or missed God's will. He went straight there from the best moment of His life, carrying the Father's approval in His ears, driven out by the same Spirit that had just landed on Him.
Forty days. Luke says He ate nothing. And afterward, He hungered.
Which is when the enemy showed up, not at the start. At the end. The devil waited until day forty, when the body was at its weakest, and then he started talking.
Now watch how Jesus fought.
Three temptations. Three answers. And every single answer is a quotation from the book of Deuteronomy.
Man shall not live by bread alone
- Deuteronomy 8:3.
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God
- Deuteronomy 6:16.
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve
- Deuteronomy 6:13.
Three quotes from the same few chapters. And those chapters are Moses explaining to Israel what their forty years in the wilderness were for.
Israel went into a desert and failed for forty years. They demanded bread. They tested God at Massah. They bowed to a golden calf.
Jesus went into the same kind of desert and was tested on the same three things - bread, testing God, and worship. In the same order.
And He answered every one of them with the words written about their failure.
He wasn't just resisting the devil. He was going back and getting it right.
One more detail. Mark adds five words nobody preaches: and was with the wild beasts.
Look at Kramskoi's painting. Nothing lives in it. No bird, no plant, no animal, no water, no road. He painted the loneliness as a fact of geography.
And then, when it was over: angels came and ministered unto him.
After. Not during.
The comfort came when the choice was already made.
For forty days there was no help, no voice, no confirmation, nothing but the Father's words spoken once, weeks earlier, that He had to keep believing in an empty country with no evidence.
That's your wilderness.
You've been treating it as proof that something went wrong. That God pulled back. That you missed it somewhere.
But the Spirit drove Him out there, and the last thing He heard before the sand was beloved.
Your dry season is not a verdict on your standing. Sometimes the desert is the proof you're on the road, not off it.
And nobody watched Him win it.
There was no crowd on that rock. No one to see the hands locked together at dawn, nothing on the horizon, nothing in His stomach, the ground covered in stones that looked like bread. The most important battle in human history was fought where there wasn't a single witness.
That's where yours is too. Not in front of anyone. At 4 a.m. Alone. With the phone in your hand or the bottle on the counter or the name in your messages and nobody in the world who would ever know.
Kramskoi painted the minute before He stood up.
He did stand up. He walked out of that desert, and Luke says He returned in the power of the Spirit with more than He carried in.
The sun's coming up on your rock too.
Stand up.
The Holy Spirit communicates to us on three major levels and most of us are only tuned to one.
The first level is scripture, the written Word that establishes the truth.
The second level is the small internal voice that requires silence to detect.
The third level is providential arrangement, where God speaks through circumstances, people and events aligned so precisely they cannot be coincidental.
FUN FACT; The ego rejects level two because it requires stillness, and ignores level three because it requires trust.
Most people stay stuck on level one, because they treat the Bible as information instead of a living transmission.
SO,if you have ever said "God never speaks to me," the problem is not the transmission. It is you the receiver.
