Today, MiG-29 fighter pilot Marat Mambetov, a flight commander with Ukraine’s 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade “Ghost of Kyiv,” was killed in combat. His aircraft was hit by a Russian missile while he was carrying out a combat mission. Marat had been conducting missile and bombing strikes against Russian forces on one of the sectors of the front. He ejected from the aircraft but, tragically, did not survive. He carried out his duty to the very end, defending Ukraine and its skies. My deepest condolences to Marat’s family, loved ones, fellow servicemen, and the entire 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade. Rest in peace, Warrior. Eternal memory and glory to the Hero. 🇺🇦🕯️

Every day and every night, we defend ourselves against Russian strikes. Yesterday, in the Kherson region, the Russians struck a monastery with an FPV drone. Tragically, one member of the monastery clergy was killed and four others were wounded. My condolences to the family and loved ones. There were strikes on critical and civilian infrastructure in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa regions. In the Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia regions, residential buildings were hit. Since the evening, the Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Cherkasy regions have also come under attack. This week alone, Russia has launched more than 2,000 attack drones against us, most of them jet-powered, as well as 1,700 aerial bombs and 19 missiles of various types.

Ukraine is constantly looking for and finding ways to defend itself and respond to these attacks on life. It is important that our partners also look for and find ways to make Russia feel its war. Now is the right moment to take new sanctions steps against the aggressor and force peace through strength. The United States has the means to do this, Europe has them, and so does every G7 country. Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries, terminals and oil depots are doing what conventional sanctions take much longer to achieve: directly constraining the industry that helps finance Moscow’s war. Recent Ukrainian attacks have repeatedly disrupted Russian refining capacity and forced restrictions on fuel exports.

“The most effective sanctions, the sanctions that work the fastest, are firing on Russian oil plants, on their terminals, on their oil depots.”

His argument is simple: every refinery knocked offline means less capacity, less revenue and fewer resources available to sustain Russia’s invasion.

I met with our military pilots who are training at the International Test Pilots School in Canada. The guys are training to master modern fighter jets, including F-16s and Gripens, and strengthen Ukraine’s combat aviation. We’re doing everything we can to protect our skies, and the key to that is having good, motivated pilots. We’re proud that Ukraine and our Armed Forces have a generation of young pilots like this. I thank Canada, all the instructors, and the training center for providing high-quality training.
