Africa’s health security depends on a skilled public health workforce. But training alone is not enough. The skills people gain must also be recognised.
With Africa facing a projected shortage of 5.85 million health workers, Africa CDC is introducing a new accreditation framework to improve the quality of public health training and ensure that learning is recognised.
Developed with the Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa (ASPHA), the framework will help ensure that training builds the right skills and delivers real results.
Investing in training matters. Making sure it counts matters even more.

Congratulations to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz, for the landmark achievement of receiving authorization to undertake clinical trials for #Brazil’s first domestically developed mRNA vaccine.
This milestone reflects Brazil’s scientific excellence and growing leadership in health innovation. Fiocruz is also the first partner in @WHO’s Global mRNA Technology Transfer Programme to advance an mRNA product to clinical trials.
WHO remains committed to working closely with Brazil and our partners to strengthen local and regional mRNA manufacturing capacities, expand equitable access to vaccines and other medical countermeasures, and build a more resilient future for health in Brazil, the region, and beyond.

What is the world’s biggest killer?
It's ischaemic heart disease, responsible for 16% of the world’s total deaths - that is equal to 9.5 million deaths in 2023.
Stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were the second and third leading causes of deaths in 2023, responsible for approximately 11% (6.8 million) and 6% (3.6 million) of total deaths, respectively.
💔 Ischaemic heart disease is a condition where the heart muscle receives less blood flow and oxygen because the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked.
🧠 Stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either due to a blockage or bleeding.
🫁 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common lung disease causing restricted airflow and breathing problems. It is sometimes called emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

The scale-up of the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is making a difference.
New supplies, strengthened logistics and expanded support for frontline teams are helping to reinforce treatment, surveillance, laboratory services and infection prevention efforts in affected communities. However, transmission persists and new hotspots continue to emerge, underscoring the need to sustain and further scale up the response.
To stay ahead of the outbreak, we must continue investing in the capacities needed on the ground: more health workers, stronger surveillance, expanded access to care, safe and dignified burials, and deeper community engagement. The progress achieved so far remains fragile and cannot be taken for granted.
I thank all partners supporting the response, including those helping to mobilize and deliver critical supplies and equipment to affected communities. Their solidarity and commitment are helping strengthen operations where they are needed most.
WHO is supporting the Government of the DRC and partners by providing technical expertise, operational leadership and support and delivering essential supplies. Sustained investment, solidarity and collective action will be critical to protect communities, save lives and bring this outbreak to an end.
