One year on from Ofsted’s new inspection framework, our research shows that the promised reforms have failed to address the fundamental problems facing schools.
We surveyed nearly 2,000 NEU members, analysed more than 1,300 inspection reports and spoke directly to school leaders.
The message is clear:
📈 Workload has increased
• 85% of those inspected reported increased workload.
• 92% of those awaiting inspection reported increased workload.
• School leaders and primary staff reported the greatest burden.
💔 Wellbeing is suffering
• 87% reported negative impacts from exhaustion.
• 86% reported increased stress levels.
• Staff in primary and more disadvantaged schools reported the worst effects.
🚪 The profession is being driven out
• One in four teachers said inspection made them want to leave the profession.
• For school leaders, that rises to more than one in three.
⚠️ The system remains flawed
• 68% said the new framework has not led to a richer evaluation of schools.
• Excessive workload, inconsistent inspections and a lack of confidence in the complaints process remain major concerns.
The government and Ofsted must act now to provide immediate relief by:
✅ Ending the use of national averages as the primary basis for judging schools on achievement, attendance and behaviour.
✅ Returning to a best-fit grading approach.
✅ Working with education unions to tackle unsustainable workload pressures.
✅ Providing meaningful wellbeing support for head teachers.
✅ Commissioning an independent review of inspector training and consistency.
✅ Creating a fully independent complaints body for Ofsted inspections.
But these measures alone are not enough.
The evidence shows that school inspection continues to damage wellbeing, increase workload and drive experienced staff out of education. We need a fundamentally different approach.
The NEU believes Ofsted should be abolished and replaced with a supportive, independent inspectorate that works with schools rather than against them; one that helps drive improvement through collaboration, trust and professional dialogue, not fear, high-stakes judgements and punitive accountability.
Our schools, educators and pupils deserve better.

We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:
RNLI volunteers involved in Sunday’s rescue have reportedly had their names and home addresses shared online.
Nigel Farage shared, then deleted, Ant Middleton’s post calling for the RNLI to be defunded.
Middleton, once an RNLI ambassador, is not fit to shine the wellies of today’s RNLI heroes.

When do they start attacking firefighters for putting out the fires in the wrong houses, or paramedics for helping the wrong sort of people.
This shit with the RNLI is only the beginning unless we stop it.
‼️ Watching Sir Robin Knox-Johnston defend the @RNLI on @BBCNewsnight is deeply personal for me.
I grew up in Porthcawl, the South Wales town whose seafront is shown whenever a great storm crashes into Britain. My mother chaired the local RNLI fundraising committee, fundraising for this cause is central to seaside communities. Many of our friends served volunteered as lifeguards and risked their lives regularly.
Those of us who grow up beside the sea know its power. We know that when someone is in danger, you do not first ask where they were born, how they arrived or whether saving them is politically convenient. You launch the lifeboat.
RNLI volunteers risk their own lives to save strangers. They do not make immigration policy and they do not control our borders. They answer distress calls and uphold the ancient law of the sea: a life in danger must be saved.
For @SuellaBraverman to call this an “RNLI taxi service”, and for Reform and parts of the Conservative Party to turn lifeboat crews into political punchbags, is utterly disgraceful.
Britain is an island nation shaped by the sea. For centuries, people arrived here and departed from here by boat. Courage, seamanship and going to the aid of those in peril are woven into our national character.
Scapegoating lifeboat volunteers for saving drowning people is not patriotism.
It is the absolute antithesis of being British.
🚨BREAKING: In a major blow to Donald Trump, the Senate voted 52–47 to advance a resolution that would bar the president from taking further military action in Venezuela without congressional approval.
Republican Sens. Paul, Hawley, Murkowski, Collins, and Young supported the measure, along with all Democrats.
In case you missed it, Nigel Farage said Reform would vote against scrapping the two-child benefit cap because some of the families who will benefit include people who are “foreign-born”.
Imagine being so racist that you would rather keep 450,000 children in poverty.
As predicted the government is scrapping planned special schools and expanding cheap unit places in mainstream schools. Thank you @samanthajbooth for seeing past the PR. #SEND

If you are too ill-informed or ideologically driven to speak factually on masks, @Nigel_Farage, then please just stop. Spreading medical disinformation (in this case, the erroneous claim that there’s no evidence showing masks protect against flu) is just dangerous. You’re meant to be a serious politician, not an irresponsible demagogue 🤷♀️
No school should be subject to inspection while the inspectorate is in this much of a mess.
The stakes are too high for schools and school leaders, the government needs to be brave and hit pause before damage is done.
They have no money and Tory laws didn’t allow it- to get funding they had to be free schools over which LAs have little control - also were often parent or charity led and not being built in the right places. Labour need to change law in this.
@SchoolsWeek Perhaps if LAs had a bit more foresight they could have seen the growing need for more specialist schools and built their own provision before the independent schools became necessary.
Why not subject House of Lords attendance allowance to a means test? Why should multimillionaires get £361 a day just for showing up when the government is cutting benefits for the disabled?
I recently spoke in Parliament against the scapegoating of disabled people.
Now there are rumours of more devastating cuts that will drive hundreds of thousands into poverty.
Enough! It's time to target the super-rich who benefit from our rigged economy, not the vulnerable.
@dave43law My dislike of Trump began when I saw the documentary about him planning a golf course in Scotland. The way he spoke about the Scottish people who had farms on the land he wanted was despicable. When I hear he was running for POTUS in 2016 I thought it was a joke.
