With all eyes on Westminster, I thought I'd offer you a view of London in June 1841 before the Houses of Parliament were even built. I've cleaned-up this old salt print photograph taken 183 years ago by William Fox Talbot, from the window of his flat in Cecil Street. The original old parliament buildings had burned to the ground in 1834 and construction of the current Houses of Parliament had not yet started. This view along the busy working wharves is amongst the very earliest photos of the City and you can see Westminster Abbey in the distance, towering high above all its neighbours.

@MichaelRosenYes My Polish g-uncle Jan was conscripted to the German army but escaped to the Polish Free Army at the battle of Monte Cassino. My British grandad was there too with the RAMC. Against each other but Jan had no choice. Jan then worked for the Polish civil service the rest of his life
