If you know one thing about the fabric and personality of the foundation of America and Americans - it’s how independent we are. Both as a people, as a nation.

We think for ourselves, don’t take shit, we sure as hell won’t be ruled or told what to do. There is no god damn collective, our forefathers rejected the very concept 250 years ago. We are rebels, resolute pioneers, constantly in search of the better.

I have no idea how badly this will go for the people in New York City but I assure you with every fiber of my being this won’t work in the country as a whole. We are not Russia, Cuba, Venezuela and never will be. And I thank God for that.

I wish my New Yorker friends the best of luck because I truly believe you will all need it with this utterly bizarre communist experiment you’re about to endure.

In Socialist India in the 70's and 80's., you had to wait 7 years to buy a scooter like Vespa. Only one company made it. You had to wait 3-4 years for a telephone line. Only Govt was allowed to run telephone service. You had to wait years for a cooking gas connection. There were only two car companies.
Life was miserable for everyone but for the ruling elite. Many in the ruling class have fond memories of that era, not because they had it all but the gap between them and commoners so so big that it made them feel better.
In the 90's India dumped Socialism not because people rose up but because the country ran out of money.
There is no warmth in collectivism. Only "equal sharing of miseries"

I’m originally from India, where Mamdani traces his roots. In many ways, he and his family remind me of India’s post Independence elite who embraced socialism and imposed Soviet style five year plans inside a democracy.

The elites were anglicized and well educated, and did very well for themselves. The rest of the country did not. The damage was profound, and in many cases unforgivable. That collectivist experiment is one reason India still trails China, which acknowledged the failure of that model more than a decade earlier.

I was born in socialist India. A foreign-exchange crisis forced the country to open its economy. My world changed almost overnight, and I discovered freedom, choice, and rugged individualism, things I’ll always choose over "warm collectivism," with its shortages, hunger, and poverty.

So imagine the unease of watching this destructive and failed ideology resurface in the heart of American, and global, capitalism: New York City. This will not end well.
