Chat Control is back, but slightly changed:
❌ No backdoor of encryption
❌ No forced scanning
🚨 But: Age verification (no anonymity)
The update just quietly passed in the EU Council & now needs to be discussed with the EU Parliament.

UK's age verification law is working exactly as critics predicted: a complete disaster.
Compliant sites lost 90% of users. Non-compliant sketchy sites saw traffic DOUBLE. On the bright side: Kids are now being taught to use Tor browser.
Congratulations, you played yourselves🧵
Mississippi just passed a law demanding online age verification, and the decentralized web is colliding with the surveillance state.
Bluesky already pulled out of the state. Mastodon refuses. The nonprofit behind the software says it literally can’t comply: no technical ability to verify ages, no interest in tracking IPs, no central control over its network.
Each Mastodon server is independent. Admins can set rules, even bolt on third-party verification if they want, but Mastodon itself won’t collect data or enforce law. That’s the point.
This dude built a web extension that can do everything the Online Safety Act tries to do in terms of age verification, without censoring a single person or website or threatening anyone.
The only dependency is that it requires a parent to voluntarily install it.
