FLY DUBAI TORN RUDDER:
Look at these two photos. The first shows what the 737 MAX’s rudder should look like. The second shows the damaged rudder after today’s flydubai incident. The rudder is basically the aircraft’s “steering” surface in the air. When the pilots move it, it helps turn the aircraft’s nose left or right and keep it pointed where they want to go.

Now imagine trying to land with part of that surface torn away. The pilots had to deal with an aircraft that was no longer responding exactly as it normally would.

WATCH: This is Why the rudder mattered in today’s flydubai incident:
This illustration is the rudder working as the aircraft lines itself up with the runway. As the pilots make small corrections, the rudder moves left and right to help keep the aircraft pointing straight. Now imagine the pilot who was landing the Fly Dubai today making those same landing corrections with part of the rudder torn away!!

That’s why the incident makes the damaged rudder so striking. The 737 MAX that diverted to Tabuk was later photographed with part of its rudder missing after its rapid descent.

The Flydubai Boeing Rudder sustained severe damage during the rapid descent that occurred today. The rudder suffered the damage because of the rapid, steep descent at high speed which put extreme aerodynamic loads on the it. The loads exceeded its design limits.

I am sure the pilot who landed this aircraft with a torn rudder had some serious challenge. The rudder provides yaw and directional control, so damage can reduce the crew’s ability to keep the aircraft aligned with the runway especially in a crosswind.

Thank God the aircraft landed safely and everyone is safe!

BREAKING: Flydubai flight FZ1073, operated by Boeing 737 MAX 8 A6-EKF, diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following a terrorist incident aboard the aircraft.

According to emerging reports, the copilot stabbed the captain and attempted to seize control of the aircraft to carry out a terrorist attack in Israel. Passengers reportedly intervened and helped subdue him. These allegations remain unconfirmed.

The aircraft reportedly made a rapid descent before landing safely. Images circulating online appear to show part of its rudder missing, although the extent and cause of any damage have not been verified. Claims that excessive speed during the descent caused structural damage require confirmation from investigators.

Flydubai described the event as an “inflight incident” and said all passengers were safe and being cared for. The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities.
