Looking at the scars, I suspect debris would've slammed up to 100 m (300ft+) high on the opposite walls.

John William Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) was born 183 years ago today. Among his many contributions to physics, one of the most famous bears his name: Rayleigh scattering.

It describes how tiny molecules in the atmosphere scatter shorter wavelengths of sunlight (blue) far more than longer ones (red). Because of this effect, the light reaching our eyes in the sky is mostly blue, giving us the familiar color of a clear day.
