Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of #ColinArcher the designer and builder of the #Polarship#Fram. On 6 March 1890 Nansen wrote Archer a letter asking for advice on a skip for his upcoming #NorthPole expedition. A few week later a legendary partnership started.
They’re both part of one of the largest industries in the UK – maritime transportation – and there’s really not very much surviving of that fleet. So these are rare examples of what was once a very common sight.

#OTD 1945: Japanese submarine I-58 sinks the Portland-class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis. The ship had completed a top secret mission delivering parts of the atomic bomb. Most die during the following four days, until an aircraft finds the survivors. #WW2
