THE PA POINTS STANDINGS (PAPS) - A different way of thinking about ranking teams 🧵
TLDR: An opponent adjusted ranking system that awards points for results, similar to the points systems of Hockey and Soccer, but tweaked in a way that suits the complexity of College Football.
Europeans just haven’t caught onto the fact that the type of fandom they admire is found in collegiate athletics in America.
A Thursday night in Lane Stadium is their cold rainy night in Stoke or Bremen. OSU/Michigan is their El Clásico.
This World Cup is not giving them the authentic American sports experience and it’s pretty much just because Jerry World has more suites than Kyle Field.
All of these are over a century old and built by institutions that are over 140 years old.
Again, we have the stadium, they just aren’t hosting the World Cup.
They will always miss the point
They don’t have football clubs that are 140 years old and have been in the community for all that time
They think having the biggest stadium and the most fans is a win. It’s not their fault, you either get it or you don’t
You could swap Tulane with Boise State if you wanted, works either way. You’d also probably need Pro/Rel between divisions to keep things somewhat competitive.
UPPER EAST
1. Miami
2. Clemson
3. Florida State
4. North Carolina
5. Virginia
6. Virginia Tech
7. Georgia Tech
8. Louisville
9. NC State
LOWER EAST
1. Boston College
2. Cincinnati
3. Duke
4. Pitt
5. Syracuse
6. UCF
7. USF
8. Wake Forest
9. West Virginia
UPPER WEST
1. Texas Tech
2. BYU
3. Utah
4. Kansas State
5. Arizona State
6. TCU
7. Arizona
8. SMU

LOWER WEST
1. Cal
2. Colorado
3. Houston
4. Iowa State
5. Kansas
6. Memphis
7. Oklahoma State
8. Stanford
9. Tulane
At this point both conferences should merge and group media rights while adding Memphis, USF, and Tulane.
36 teams. Upper and lower divisions on 18 split into east and west pods of 9.
8 pod games and 2 cross-pod games. No conference championship (they are dying anyways)
Upper divisions get way more money and use the ACC unequal rev share model. Big brands are guaranteed competitive revenues while smaller programs don’t get left behind like the Pac 2
Big 12 full share media revenue members made $51.8M while ACC full share members made $47.1M each.
Clemson, Florida State, Miami, UNC
Imagine what we could make🤤 #NewBig12
Might as well make it 24 adding Louisville, NC State, Virginia & Virginia Tech
The problem is not the amount of marquee games in the Big Ten, it’s the fact that the conference added the biggest west coast brands but because FOX wants to own the NOON slate, they can never select Oregon, USC, UCLA, or Washington home games. That means no:
Oregon vs Boise State
Oregon @ USC
Washington @ USC
Nebraska @ Oregon
Ohio State @ USC
Michigan @ Oregon
Indiana @ Washington
Washington @ Oregon
At least 8 Marquee games that FOX has willingly boxed themselves out of. That is how we get Indiana vs North Texas and Ohio State vs Kent State on Big Noon.
It’s also why Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State games are always selected by FOX. It’s their only option.
North Texas vs Indiana & Kent State vs Ohio State for your tentpole CFB show….woof.
Clear to see why Big 10 TV partners are in such a rush to expand playoffs.
Postseason games look a lot better when your marquee game options are this thin.
We are Iowa. Solid foundation. Good defense. Could even force an upset or two on home soil, but when we get on the field with the elite teams the talent gap is blatant.
