The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2025 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt “for having explained innovation-driven economic growth” with one half to Mokyr “for having identified the prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress” and the other half jointly to Aghion and Howitt “for the theory of sustained growth through creative destruction.”

Is Erdoğan trying to extinguish all political opposition in Turkey? No. He wants to ensure that today’s mighty opposition—secular, center left CHP would beat Erdoğan’s party in a fair election—stays in opposition at least during the rest of Erdoğan’s lifetime. A weakened opposition serves him and his oligarchs better than than no opposition at all.

Without an opposition, Turks could take to the streets. For Erdoğan to keep power, he’d certainly need to become more repressive, which is risky. It could stoke resistance and cause capital flight. He and his oligarchs prefer a tame CHP that’s not so weak that citizens lose all hope of gaining power through peaceful means. At the same time, it must not be strong enough to pose a real threat to Erdoğan’s dictatorship.

At the moment, CHP is a huge threat to Erdoğan’s rule. Hence, the machinations of recent days, weeks, and months. CHP is pushing back—ingeniously. Cards are stacked against it, but hope springs eternal.
