The Founders pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to build this. Nine of the fifty-six signers died of wounds or hardship during the war. Twelve had their homes burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Abraham Clark had two sons on a British prison ship and refused to recant his signature to free them. Not one of them defected.

And Jefferson, the man history books call a hypocrite, wrote the most passionate condemnation of the slave trade in the founding era and fought to put it in the Declaration itself. Congress deleted it.

The question today's article asks is simple and uncomfortable.
