We have been 3D modeling our corals on the reef that were treated with probiotics to more accurately access tissue surface area remaining on each colony. This is how we better determine if probiotics can slow or stop #SCTLD. Check it out! Spin a coral around and see for yourself!
Our CHAMP lab helped with this research investigating microbial size classes associated with #SCTLD. We are proud and excited to see this work published!
An update: I am completing my masters thesis in the Coral Health and Marine Probiotics Lab at the Smithsonian Marine Station! @NU_ThreeSeas@PolypProtectors
The local Wilmington news covering a certain @UNCW_BaMB prof on the work done by his lab & collaborators to develop probiotic treatments for #SCTLD.

We are trialing a few new strains of probiotics on corals in aquria. @carolinamdeclet is busy fragmenting M. cavernosa colonies, which will be dosed once weekly to determine if the strains can slow or stop #SCTLD
We absolutely adored spending time with Dr. Mallon while she was at SMS! We learned a ton and got to laugh a lot together along the way. We know she will smash it in her future endeavors! Way to go @underwaterjenny !!!!! ๐๐ฅณ
My final day as a @SmithsonianSMS#postdoc with this wonderful team -including those not in the group photo today! Thank you all this memorable experience. Excited to continue collaborating for more groundbreaking #research on the impact of ocean deoxygenation on #coralreefs ๐ชธ
Probiotics Friday! ๐๐ We are busy creating probiotic treatments for a new study being conducted in the FL Keys. We want to see if we can heal corals that consistently get reinfected with SCTLD after being treated with antibiotics! Fingers crossed! ๐ค
Tune in to our head scientist Dr. Valerie Paul 1/11/23 9 am EST to hear an overview of environmental research at the @SmithsonianSMS, focused on new research programs including Indian River Lagoon monitoring, biomedical research on marine natural products, coral disease, and eDNA
Congratulations Matteo and Aurora for successfully defending this week! What a power couple! The CHAMP lab is proud of you and happy we got to be part of your journey. Way to go! ๐๐ฅณ๐พ
We are excited to see what the next chapter brings.
Dr. & Dr.! @ScubaMettiu@AuroraGiorgi88
@carolinamdeclet, @Kelly__Pitts, andย @kscheue22ย attended theย @IRLScienceFest! They showed young scientists how we treat corals with probiotic paste, only this time using elementary school slime. It was clear they had a great day as every inch of the table was covered in goo!๐งช๐ฉโ๐ฌ
@VibrioSoup@erin_papke and @Kelly__Pitts discussed the benefits of using probiotics to treat #SCTLD at an invention workshop in Grand Cayman hosted by @doecayman and the C-COT working group. Thanks for inviting us! it is wonderful to see such passion for treatments! @JNCC_UK
@Kelly__Pitts lead a team in Grand Cayman to show how to use probiotics to treat corals with #SCTLD along their reefs! Although no bacteria was involved this time, everyone now knows how to use our bagging and paste methods! Great job, Kelly!
