On this day in 1985, the 12" version of Pop Life was released in the US. Rather than simply extending the runtime, the 12" version reimagined the album track with an expanded arrangement, longer instrumental sections, and subtle production flourishes that made it a favorite among DJs and collectors alike.

Nearly two decades later, Prince was still reinventing the song onstage. This performance of "Pop Life" from the Aladdin in Las Vegas on December 15, 2002, is a reminder that his music was never static, proving why his artistry continues to resonate across generations.
