The late Nollywood veteran, Mr Ibu, publicly endorsed Peter Obi in the run-up to the 2023 presidential election. Despite knowing Obi never built a specialist hospital as governor capable of treating the medical condition that ultimately took his life, Mr Ibu remained steadfast in his support for Obi. He joined Nollywood actors from the South East to raise funds for Obi’s campaign.

In 2024, Mr Ibu, who had publicly supported Peter Obi, suffered cardiopulmonary failure that could not be treated in any hospital in Anambra and, indeed, the entire South East. The late veteran actor was transported to Lagos to receive medical care at Evercare Hospital, a privately owned facility established at the behest of the Lagos Government’s Medical Tourism Master Plan. This hospital provided care that Obi had never offered to his fellow kinsmen who overwhelmingly voted for him.

Should any sensible human being mock the late Mr. Ibu for his right to make his own political choices?

Today, nearly half of a village in Enugu is dying of chronic kidney diseases. Ironically, Peter Obi visited the helpless patients after publicly intercepting law enforcement response in defence of fake drug merchants responsible for many of this endemic nephropathy. Most of these kidney patients voted for Peter Obi oo. Will it also be fair for anyone to mock their renal condition on the basis of their political support for a man who never built a single specialist hospital to manage their renal failure?

Alhaji Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo), one of Nollywood’s finest veterans, is the latest victim of this sustained pattern of mocking sick citizens for political gain by a mob group actively controlled by Peter Obi.

When Obidients openly mock people at their most vulnerable moments because they exercised their constitutional rights to publicly profess their political beliefs, what usually follows is hypocritical silence from those who will later come to act as moralists when the other side reciprocates the favour.

If these lunatics don’t know where to draw the line, some of us will not be quiet in reminding you all that you and your senseless messiah will always be paid back in the same coin.

Think Yoruba First Felicitates with Yoruba Sons and Daughters at Home and in the Diaspora

Think Yoruba First warmly felicitates with all Yoruba sons and daughters in Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Togo, and across the world as we celebrate Ìsẹ̀se Day.

For thousands of years, the Yoruba people have carried with them a civilization built upon history, spirituality, knowledge, family, community, dignity and an enduring connection to the land of our ancestors. Our celebrations are therefore more than occasions for merriment. They are moments when generations come together, when families reconnect, when communities renew their bonds, and when we pause to give thanks to Olódùmarè for the gift of life and the blessings bestowed upon our people and our land.

Ìsẹ̀se is a celebration of who we are.

It is a time to remember that before the borders that separated our people into different modern states, before colonial classifications and the divisions of geography, there existed a people bound together by a shared language, ancestry, worldview and civilization.

Ìsẹ̀se reminds us of the depth of our antiquity and the richness of the knowledge inherited from those who walked this earth before us. It calls us to honour our ancestors, respect our elders, preserve the wisdom of our traditions and understand the responsibilities that come with being custodians of a civilization that has endured through generations.

Our heritage is not merely something to be displayed during festivals. It is a living inheritance. Our language, names, values, music, art, philosophy, institutions, oral traditions, festivals and indigenous knowledge are expressions of a civilization that continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in its ancestral foundations.

Think Yoruba First particularly expresses its profound appreciation to the Governments of Oyo, Ogun, Lagos and Osun States for recognising the significance of Ìsẹ̀se Day and declaring a public holiday to commemorate the occasion.

This gesture represents more than the granting of a day away from work. It is an important acknowledgement of the cultural heritage, spiritual traditions and historical identity of the Yoruba people. By creating space for citizens to observe, celebrate and reconnect with their ancestral traditions, these governments have demonstrated an appreciation of the importance of cultural continuity.

We commend these states for supporting the renewal of Yoruba culture and spirituality and for recognising that indigenous culture is not an obstacle to modernity, but an essential foundation upon which a confident and culturally conscious society can be built.

Think Yoruba First encourages other governments within Yorubaland to consider similar measures that promote the preservation, teaching and celebration of Yoruba heritage. We also encourage the governments that have taken this important step to deepen their commitment by supporting Yoruba language education, historical research, cultural institutions, indigenous festivals, traditional knowledge and the documentation of our oral heritage.

The preservation of a civilization cannot be left solely to individuals and cultural organisations. Government has an important role to play in creating an environment in which culture can survive, flourish and be transmitted from one generation to another.

The above names are not ordinary; they are living testimonies that sometimes, even when the night is darkest, dawn is already sharpening its sword.

And so, I draw hope from these witnesses as I put my mind at rest and look forward to the miraculous return of Alhaji Taiwo Hassan - Ogogo to our screens.

The action in his DNA - “Ti n ba fún ẹ left…” - his unwavering faith in Allah - “Wallahi, Talahi, mo fi títobi Ọlọ́run bura” - and his calm, peaceful dealings with men may yet prove to be formidable weapons against this unwanted intruder called cancer.

Ogogo is a veteran of many battles. This, too, shall pass.

Our favourite thespian shall rise again.
The screens shall welcome him again.
The drums shall sound again.
And the story shall end not with a full stop, but with a triumphant comma.
