@softincel@cmuratori This questions is not for me because I don't use AI in my games. But even without using it, I don't care about an actual gamer pirating my game because he probably wouldn't have bought it anyway. But I do care about AI companies using it to train an LLM and earn profit from that
@ChrisE31589@cmuratori First, for a millionth time, we are talking about obtaining content illegally, "originality" or "referencing things" is not part of that at all.
Second, your argument has no point, neither to the originality topic, nor the original piracy topic
@Jacob_A_Maynard@cmuratori That's not what we are talking about in this discussion.
We are talking about literally obtaining content illegally. So the "human" example would be someone downloading a million pirated games illegally. It doesn't even matter if you create something out of it or not
@L771834@cmuratori As a general mindset yeah, that's true. But this information is widely spread and public. So, now that you do know about this you are presented with the moral dilemma. If you happen to find out something naughty about your coffee brand, you'll probably consider stop buying it too
@CygnusSlaughter@cmuratori No, this _is_ the core criticism. You are addressing something different. The question is about AI companies literally obtaining content illegally, literally pirating it. If you use AI and are ok with them pirating others' stuff, why'd you care if someone pirates your stuff?
@softincel@cmuratori No law is natural. But once again, we are not talking about the legal side of the question. Pirating anything is and will still be illegal. The point is, it's hypocritical to produce something with pirated content and then get mad if someone pirates your product
@CygnusSlaughter@cmuratori Pirating a movie is illegal. It doesn't matter if you use it as a reference for something or just watch it with your wife. That problem of AI comes much much before the discussion about copyright and derivative work
@akhosravian@cmuratori VS contributes only a tiny amount to the value that Photoshop has as a tool, it's not related to its output, and is made by a gigantic company as Microsoft. Piracy is still illegal but on the immorality gradient it's probably a very much okayish case
@akhosravian@cmuratori Ahh I see what you mean. So gamedev = a graphic designer using photoshop, and gamer = some random client asking for a design. I think there is a gradient on this morality topics and to which extent there are things being pirated in the scenario... continues
@akhosravian@cmuratori As a consumer or as a photoshop founder?
If you are a company making a licensed software while using pirated software yourself, it would be hypocritical to have a strong anti-piracy stand, wouldn't it?
@cmuratori I think they just start by concluding that the piracy thingy is not an issue, and then they come up with something that sounds like an argument for that
